The guys at work were talking about the AR-10 and some of them claimed that it was not restricted. I was sure it was b ut couldn't find anything on the Firearms site so I called 731 4000 and was told that it is prohib. Is this for real or what?

I'm going to suggest that you're in the wrong forum...

As for the AR-10, no idea... Is there any reason you're looking at that instead of the AR-15?

It's a prohib... The Firearms Act terms any automatic firearm as prohibited, regardless of if it's been modified into semi-auto or not. The AR-15 is semi-auto only, so it's legal.

forget about what "guys" say at work- about 99% have no idea what they're talking about- if you want to KNOW something, best to ASK HERE or on one of the other boards- eg i don't know how many people don't know the difference between the ar and the m16- just b/c it's a 308 means nothing- it's whether it's on the 'LIST" OR NOT that matters- there's any number of 308s on that list, as well as 223s - i've often been informed that the mini14 is restricted, when in fact, it is not- and that's just one example

I believe that if you had an original semi AR10 it would be non-restricted due to the fact that it predates the AR15. However, most of the original AR10 rifles where select fire so are prohib here. I've heard rumors of a few original semi only AR10s kicking around but I've never seen one myself.

Now if you are talking about the modern AR10 type rifles, these are based on the AR15 and as such are restricted.

DOGZILLA,
is your semi AR 10 a GENUINE Armalite, Colt or AI/Dutch built ORIGINAL semi auto AR 10, and not one of the newer AR 10/AR 15 HYBRIDS, which use many AR 15 parts???

It could be argued that any of the VERY RARE SEMI ONLY ORIGINAL AR 10S PRE-DATE THE AR 15, and that since the AR 15 derives from the AR 10, not the other way around, THEREFORE, the SEMI ONLY genuine/original AR 10s are not to be included in the AR 15 ORDER IN COUNCIL RESTRICTION.

But,
this argument might get VERY EXPENSIVE and long time in court, to get the CFO/CFC to agree with.

PS: while I have owned several AR 10s, including three dozen of the original AI built Converted Auto AR 10s, I have never personally seen one of the rare semi-auto only original AR 10s ... some of which [ Dutch airline survival prototypes?] are rumored to exist here in Canuckistan.

"...since the AR-10 was a .308 that it was not restricted..." He's confused. The calibre has nothing to do with a rifle's status.
"...get VERY EXPENSIVE and long time in court..." Yep. I believe they consider the AR-10 to be a variation of the AR-15, despite reality.
A real mid 1950's vintage AR-10 was select fire. Lots of 'em were semi'd in the early 80's and sold in Canada. Sold a bunch(Sudanese, mostly. Still holding desert sand) myself out of the shop I worked in, long ago. Evil now due to being a converted FA.
Don't think any of the current semi-auto rifles have made it to Canada. Wouldn't put any money on it though. Mind you, Armalite will only ship to a US FFL holder.

No mine is not a military AR10, but a current dirivitive (Armalite). Doesn't mean I love it any less and it has gone almost 1000 rds without a single malfunction. It's also the one I made the lower from scratch, and put a 24 inch match barrel on. You can get stripped armalite uppers and most parts including bolt carrier groups, but not complete uppers (not sure about lowers since i made my own). Krieger will sell you an Ar 10 barrel. I am in the process of aquiring parts to make another upper. and if things get slow at work maybe talk my partner in crime into helping me make another lower.
