Stupid idea or not so bad?

Looks great! It doesn't matter what we think, as long as it works for you. Is it permanent? If it was me, I would probably do a leather wrap. Something about raw products on a gun really appeals to me.

I think the foam is a great idea. That cheek-weld really does suck when it's cold out.

But keep the 550 cord - Duct-tape is just so... Ghetto.

It weathers/wears poorly, and if you pull the wrap off to clean it you'll prolly mangle the foam. And there's gummy adhesive that tends to weep when it gets hot....

Yuck.

x2. I prefer the utility of the paracord wrap myself. You can use it for so many other tasks in a pinch. And with the VZ it not like its building a piano, its a workhorse with a workhorse round.

Using paracord is like shaving with a straight razor, it shows you have a set of hangers on you. Nice down pink pillows would be comfy as well but men don't use those either. Growing a beard in the winter is another option;)

I like the look and think you did a good job on it, like the colour as well as it provides some contrast and 'personality'.

Should you insist on pimp'n it up, if you have a hardware store close by, they usually stock polyurethane pipe insulation (don't get the closed cell polystyrene, just trust me on that one) that wraps around the pipe and sticks onto itself... and it's even black if that's important. Try the 1/2" or 3/4". It's cheap, designed as thermal insulation, easy to source and replace as required.

For a fraction of what you invested in that sight you could have a proper solid stock and it would help you get the most out the sight/rifle.;)

Unless you are going for the "old school" original look, maybe with some wood furniture etc. there really is no practical advantage to the CZ58 folder. It's not well designed for accurate firing.

cleanly wrapped electrical tape wouldnt look to bad on there. some rust paint would prevent rust. Looks good Stevo

I think the paint on the folder should be good enough.

Hey looks good, tacticool Stevo!

Seriously, nice job, did you put skate tape on the butt of the folder for grip yet?

Not yet, but I have a big chunk of it ready to go.

It's already done, and you want to remove it and duct tape it?!

black spray bomb the cord right where it is.

It only took about 10 minutes to do. It's not like I have a lot of time invested in it.

No, it's not permanent in any way.

Ghetto is fine with me. I'm more concerned with function than appearance. That foam is like $2 for a 4 ft length. Not exactly expensive to replace.

I did use 1/2" pipe insulation. I still had to remove material from it as the OD of the stock is well under 1/2".

You mean like this stock?

Or maybe one of these?

I don't have any issues shooting the folder accurately. I've got lots of parts in the bin to try out.

Looks good, plus you can use it for survival shelter making, etc. It might look better if you weaved? the top layer like the strider knives.

Weaved would look great. I have no idea how to do it, though.

I forgot, you get every new VZ part before it hits the streets.:D Although pretty I'm still not a fan out the vz folder cause I can't get a good check weld and don't shoot well with it.

LOL. Honestly, I greatly prefer a fixed stock on a VZ, whether it's the factory one or an AR type. I'm trying to keep the compactness of the 12" gun by staying with the the folder. If I can Mickey Mouse a solution that makes the folder work better that would make me happy. If not, I'll probably go back to a fixed stock of some sort.

the fixed stock hurt my face when shooting. the folder didn't hurt any more, but was uncomfortable. i used the pipe insulation then wrapped mine a couple of years ago. no problem with rust, comfortable to shoot too.

I'm wondering about heat shrink rubber tubing? Wrap the thing in a few layers of duct tape for a little padding, slap some 1 inch tubing over it and throw the heat gun to it? Hardest part would be to get it over the but of the stock. If you could find 1 inch with a 4:1 shrink ratio it may work.

I thought about that. I can't see getting it over the butt plate and being able to shrink it enough.

Can you unpin the receiver end of the stock, slide the shrink tubing over it that way, then re-attached the stock to the receiver? I don't think I want to put my face on heat shrink tubing, though. The stuff I have used gets hard and stiff after being shrunk.

I like the look in POWERWAGON's pic, that would be my first try at it.

Stevo, you've got the right idea, but just do a really tight double wrap of paracord on the cheek part of the folder. You shouldnt need the foam it just makes it bulky.

What i did was take OD green 550 cord and just did two layers, starting at the front and working back, then doing a second layer back to the front. The double layer of cord is perfect in that it dramatically improves the cheekweld, looks great, and doesnt come off. Its also pretty low profile and keeps it nice and compact. No need to piss around with tape or foam or anything.

Also, i made a buttpad for the folder with a peice of small bicycle inner tube, i just slid it over and heated it up till it stuck on. Works good.

Or just go back to the NEA+CTR, thats probably the best setup on these guns.

Or you can make a padded check rest with a gel mouse pad & velcro. Works great as well and secured in place with the paracord and it's custom fit to your face. Only down side is the single hump, like on the folder with the wood cheek rest so it won't have a smooth profile.

Regards,

Mmmm, firm and natural... Oh yeah, we're still talking about stocks, right? :D

The paracord looks good, be better in black, but that can be corrected down the road. If it wants to stay in place like that I would say it's a keeper.

I do prefer this, though, even if I can't see how it is staying on.
