I have a 10/22 that I use pretty much daily as I don't believe in "safe queens".....it works great But it has quite a few dings and straches on the stock....ie. love marks:p. Now I am thinking of putting some hockey tape on part of the butt stock where I get my check weld so I have a bit of grip there instead of slippery wood, even more so if its snowing or raining out side and same think to the "pistol grip" area on the stock. Is this a bad idea? I can always get a new stock if I ever wanna sell it in the future but I doubt that and it may look odd but I am more into function then looks at this point in time.

Your gun, go for it! If it's supposed to be a go to gun, I see nothing wrong with making it more comfortable for YOU to use. Don't worry, it's not the milsurp section and you will not get plasted for defacing a 10/22:p
 
Instead of hockey tape, why not use camo tape?
It'll give it more of a bush rifle look and the stuff is cheap & found at any sport store.
 
I thought of that too(the camo tape) but I thought that it has the same texture of duct tape? I will take alook around for sure tho. And I am not gonna be heart broken about making a $300.00 gun ugly:p
 
You can get camo tape that feels like the same as hockey tape. There is some that is camo duct tape that wears the camo off really fast in my experience. Don't get that.

No one would care unless it's a mint unfired sks or enfield. There are many of those that have gotten much, much worse treatment then a bit of tape.
 
I've used Pachmayr tape in the past. It probably does the same thing as hockey/camo tape.

Its rubberized and arguably somewhat less ghetto... (won't trap moisture... a good thing)

That's pretty steep. I really try to promote online buying when it's like that. I really try to support the locals but that's too large of a markup. Like they just bought them at the competition and marked them up 30-40 % anyways.
 
Why not get your hands on a chunk of neoprene and cut it to size and attach it a matter you see fit for the stock.

I'd use a piece of anti slip tape for the grip.

It doesn't have to look ugly to work.

Tape will roll and you'll get the adhesive on your cheek and hand. And it will look haggard.

Have you thought of stripping/sanding off the varnish and oiling the wood instead??

Some of the handgun crowd use skateboard grip tape on their guns. Its almost like sandpaper though so it might be a bit rougher than you would like.

Many of the aftermarket accessory outfits make some sort of grip tape or the like. Might be a bit harder to find but I would agree with those who say that there are better things out there than hockey tape.

Maybe look up stippling if you want a bit of a project.
