Ok guys, I need your help. I washed my RC K98k rifle the other weekend, and I didn't get it oiled. Bad thing on my part. I have surface rust at least at the crown in the grooves, probably all the way down the barrel. If I come out of that ok, the next time I wash, I'm using a brush to do the grooves, not just the swabs as was suggested. But thats not where I need your help

My rifle was already stripped down, except for the bolt. So now that I am starting to oil and finish the cleaning process, I went to disassemble it. I got the extracter arm off when I realized that I don't have the safety in the right spot. So silly me, I thought that I could put bolt negative extracter into the stripped reciever, push the bolt forward, fix the safety, pull the bolt, and continue on. Now I have a bolt, in the rear of the receiver that I can't get forward or remove. I've tried everything I can think of, and now I'm pleading for help!!!

The extractor collar is hanging up in the cut for the third safety lug. You will have to go into the lugway with a slender tool and compress the extractor collar lugs a bit until they clear the cut in the receiver.

To clean, get some decent solvent like Hoppes 9, elite bore gel, Etc. and a good bronze brush. Scrub like the dickens. Then take an old bore brush and wrap a patch around it. Scrub with that for a while, run an oily patch through the bore and Voila.

I would also suggest picking up some balistol and using the to oil your bore every time you use water-based cleaners in your barrel.

Ballistol is water soluble so it will adhere to the steel even if it's wet and will allow the water to evaporate away while still protecting the metal surface. GREAT stuff.

Guys, never will I admit that I said this, but I have found that surface rust removes real good if you scrub it with Extra-Fine grade steel wool, DRY. Thou shalt not use oil of any description else thy metal finish will ALL come off.

If you're careful, you can get away with it. Remove surface rust with the steel-wool and THEN wipd the rifle down with oil, then reassemble.

FINE grade steel-wool is actually too stiff for this job. SUPERFINE will just turn to powder, but works okay on brass.

Now that you've got the extractor collar out of where it shouldn't have crawled to, this is the easy part! Good luck!
