I've hunted hard the last three weekends...... Seen moose all 3.. But no shot... Was with a buddy last night.....a moose walked out at 320yards.... but would only offer yet again... A heavy frontal quartering to me kind of shot..... My buddy said I should have taken him between the two shoulders... But I let the rifle down.. Getting frustrated . Was packing a .270wsm with 140 gr accubonds.. Seems waiting for a broadside shot has made me pass up 3 moose now.... Thoughts?
 
320 is a long, long, way for me but if the crosshairs were sitting dead still on the vitals I probably would have pulled the trigger.

That's just my call sitting here in in front of the computer, could be lots of reasons not to shoot.
 
Not confident in a sure kill and let him walk. Is the sign of a true hunter and sportsman.You make us proud keep it up Buddy
 
good choice ! i always know that when i pack my 7mag loaded with 150 sciroccos i cant hit at moose @450yds but cannot take a shoulder shot on a bull at any distance.
the downside to a light rifle with light recoil.

holding a 338 win mag or even a 300 winny i may have made a different choice
 
I am a firm believer that the vast majority of animals shot at 300 or more yards, are in reality---shot at 190 yards or less.

300 yards is a long shot everywhere but the internet.
 
300 isn't bad with a heavy barreled accurate rifle from a good position but if you are not sure best to use caution. Then again many of these types of rifles are a bit of a pain to lug around all day and have a fair bit of kick to them.
 
Having an animal down and having wasted meat are two different things. Wait for your good shot, if it doesn't show up, then you never had one. Its better to have ethics with empty tags than the other way around.
 
using a leupold with boone and crockett... lots of range time... shooting off my Primos trigger sticks.. I was on him steady... held the 300 yard tock mark on him a half a hair high. There was no wind.. just getting frustrated.

I believe i made the right choice.. most animals i shoot are under 100 yards.... but i am very confident in my shoot out to 400 now , which is not considered long range hunting by most peoples means....but yes a long shot @ 320. Ive put alot of range time in out to 500, so i felt under 400 i was good. Just didnt like the angle.. and the moose ar not cooperating
 
Depending what I was packing, I might have taken the shot. I do carry my Leica rangefinder with me, and have taken a couple deer a little past 300 before, and am confident that I could make a clean shot. With the load you describe, I'd have made the same decision as you. Had I had a TSX on top there, I'm not sure what I'd do. With my 338 and 225 accubonds... BLAM-O
 
You, and only you, can make such a decision, based on your experience and comfort.
If you did not feel comfortable with that presentation/range, then you did the right thing.
I would have dropped the hammer on that moose, but I am a different person altogether.
I have shot at least 10 moose & Elk that were quartering toward me, between 75 yards and 375.
But I always have premium bullets up the spout [the .270, 140AB qualifies, BTW] and usually am packing a big 30 when purposely hunting big animals. [Elk, particularly.]
I have never had a problem getting the 180 or 200 Partition to reach the lungs from such an angle, and although I have not shot very many animals with the Accubond, my limited experience with it leads me to believe it would make it in as well.
I am now using 175 LRX's & 180 TTSX's, and they will also do the job.
Here's hoping you find a nice big bull moose, standing broadside at 100 yards or less!!

x2...I agree 100%, it depends on your ability...with a solid steady rest I too would have taken the shot if I had my 300 win mag or 8 mm rem. mag at the time.
 
Even if you had taken him down...the bullet almost always ends up piercing the gut after travelling through the vitals. I never take that shot. Always broadside in the vitals.
