stupid moose :(

In the 'heat' of the moment, it can be difficult to make the right decission. Under the condition and circumstances, no one can better judge than you, if you should or shouldn't take the shot. You made the correct choice. If you've practiced shooting at those distances and if you were sure of what your shot placement would be, whole new ball game.

Nothing at all wrong with passing a shot you're not comfortable with...if you've been seeing moose the last three weekends somethign tells me your time will come soon enough!

My zone only opens up 1 Nov :( but I have a bull draw :D and last year I saw 5 bulls in the first week. And on the mornign of day 2 we had a cow and calf inside our camp just as we were finishing breakfast, so we watched them for about 5 min while we finished our coffee. No one had a calf tag last year.

You have 3 weekends out and have seen moose every weekend, you'll get your shot.

I've taken a moose like you describe, quartering towards at 300m only a chest shot. I had a firm rifle rest to shoot from and was using a 300WM with handloads - 200grn accubonds. It didn't go far, but that was a long night as it was almost last light when I shot it, I was hunting solo as well. I got back to camp about midnight, with my moose.

I am a firm believer that the vast majority of animals shot at 300 or more yards, are in reality---shot at 190 yards or less.

300 yards is a long shot everywhere but the internet.

I hear you. My buddy shot a moose this past weekend. When i drove up to him I asked him how far it was and he said 300 at least. We GPS'ed it at 180. Even at that he only hit it twice out of 5 shots. There is a big difference from a range to shooting freehand at a live moose when you are excited.

had a great rest.. Was steady....breathing in check... Was just. Waiting for him to turn. I don't freehand over 100 yards... Ah well... Going again this Sunday... Hopefully feasting on moose loins by sunday

Just remember, your the one with the gun and your the one that has to make the shot, I think your showing the makeup of a true hunter in not taking a shot that your not comfortable making, GOOD FOR YOU, wait for your shot it'll come, it's a bit warm yet anyway.

Always a hard one.

I've passed up shots that hunting partners right beside me took, and they ended up getting the animal.

Honestly, I don't regret a single shot I ever passed up, but I do regret one that I took while having someone was pressing me hard to "SHOOT!!!". I won't ever do that again.
