With a ball projectile, a .303 round was too long for a 700 Remington .308 length magazine box, which is a typical short action.

Lee Enfield is a short action, Ross MkIII and P14 are long but seeing as how these actions were only made in one length it is irrelevant.

The Ross is long enough for the big cartridges too, and that comes back to the 303 being a cartridge, that typically fits long action arms.
The real question is whether the typical SMLE type rifle can be considered a medium? length action??

We used the word schlong wayyyyy different years ago (but it did have to do with action......)

I vote for long action. My BSA 303 is based on a Mauser 98 action and it about right.
