Yay! See that trader rating of 1? I am now the proud owner of one brand new norc m305. So exciting! It's not only my first m14, it's the first firearm I've ever owned. PAL arrived in the mail Monday, m305 arrived in the mail Thursday. Yup weimajack is a fast shipper :)

So now come all the stupid questions, I really know nothing.

Like...

How the heck do you get the cloth tube containing cleaning rods out of the stock? I pulled as hard as I can, then I pulled as hard as I can with pliers. I gave up.

Do I have to disassemble it to get the damn tools out? Or am I doing something stupid?

Yeah, same here.

After the second sweat-inducing tug, I figured there was something in there that the communists don't want me to take out just yet... so to be safe I buried the stock in the back 40 and replaced it with USGI wood!!! ;-)

The stuff inside is pretty indestructible and wedged in tight. I took a narrower screwdriver to pry things away from the stock, then gave a good tug. It came out. No bid deal. The stuff, other than the tool, is laying around the shop someplace.

Grab one section of the cleaning rod at a time and yank em out till you can pull the whole bag out.
Once you have the cleaning rod sections out, save one to use with the chamber cleaner but never use that rod on the rifle. Get a better one piece or a pull through cable type.

We got yer backs. Bring on the silly questions, because all of us were noobs at one time or another. Now many of us have screwed up enough times to become 'experts'. :D

Welcome to the addiction! And the money pit!

Cheers,
Barney

Welcome to the club, your going to have a lot of fun with this platform, and as others have suggested remove the cleaning rod first :)

Sounds like very sticky grease and a bad day for Wong Fei at the Norinco factory. The tools are probably just wedged and glued in place.

If you have one of those Shark home steam generating cleaner gadgets, try aiming the nozzle into the butt trap and easing the tools out.

take out ONE section of rod, the rest collapses in on itself- then you can pull on the tab- believe it or not, that sleeve will hold 4 sections of rod, the jag, AND a bore brush( i know , i have the real thing) however, for the usefullness of it, you should LEAVE IT ALONE- go get a DEWEY or similar QUALITY ROD for cleaning- that STEEL rod will scratch your bore - and pull out your combo tool and wrap some patches around the centre post( where the rod sections screw in) to stop that from rattling- or just take the works out altogether and hide it in a drawer or something- the ONLY piece of any use in the buttstock is the COMBO TOOL - the rest should be replaced with commercial ( quality) cleaning materials
also get yourself a 12 guage hull, drill the primer , and use THAT for your BORE GUIDE- you want to drill large enough for your rod to pass through- it's precisely big enough to fit over your flash hider and still keeps your rod centered

I just got a Norc M14 the other day as well, had a similar issue...just gotta reef on it...helps to use use pliers...don't worry, the communist canvas wrapper can take the abuse.

i just used wide pliers to grip

then once the wax paper was removed from around the rods, it fit better...snug but not so tight for pliers.

They all seem to have that issue. It's the stiching on the end that gets stuck inside. Just take the butt pad off and everything will come out. If you plan on using that cleaning kit reverse the canvas bag when you put it in or it will get stuck again.

While we are asking questions, can you use gun blueing chemicals over a Parkarised finish and get a flat black effect. Dont ask why :)

I took the whole back section out anyway to remove the 2 gallons of packing oil in the butt stock. Removed everything and dryed everything off. The rods came out fairly easy and then just pull the cloth bag out. You will want to clean out all the oil in the storage comparments anyway.

Lol not so the canvas totally ripped. Oh well. I did eventually get them out with pliers pulling on just one rod as suggested and eventually that worked, but I will take the advice to buy some quality cleaning tools.

Thanks guys for the help! I'm sure there are more stupid questions coming.

Today I did successfully field strip it down to getting the bolt out and then put it back together so I felt good about that.

It came out easy the first time, then after puting 100rnds through it, the kit was SO badly wedged into the stock that I had to take it apart to get the kit out. after that I stoped storing it in the stock. I think the biggest issue you will have with your new rifle will be....ammo supply. Unless you have lots of disposable income lol. They are a great gun, lots of fun to tinker with, and shoot.
