Stupid question

Most do, especially those 38 Super guys. I shoot .40, and after reloading them a few times I tend to just let them go to whoever wants to pick them up.

unless it is a no brass pick match yes they do. at a no pick match the ROs can pick the brass as a little bonus for working the match.

why a no pick match? because it adds time to the match and when you are running a big match you don't want to have any delays happening and trying to herd off a bunch of shooters so you can start the next squad gets a little tiring after three days of telling them to move along.

Additional explanation to the "no pick match" - these are usually big matches, where most of the competitors have flown or driven in, are staying at hotels, eating at restaurants and have paid big match fees. Leaving $60 worth of brass or so on the ground is the least of the overall expenses and even if there was picking, many wouldn't - preferring to focus on thier shooting performance instead.

At club level matches it depends on the shooter. A lot of people don't, you can if you want subject to time restrictions as noted above and occasional ribbing from fellow shooters. A lot of people will wait until the end of the squad and then help 'sweep up' which net's you more than just your brass. .45 and .38 super shooters typically want their brass back and will happily troll through the pile at then end of a squad.

Outdoors - don't bother, it will take forever and you'll have all the grit and dirt too.

Personally I don't bother at matches as I can go to he club on a Monday night (when most new shooters are there) and pick up more once fired factory brass than you get at the average match :dancingbanana:

Or you could 'help' at the next black badge course. On mine there were 8 shooters firing 40 and only one picking the brass up at the end of the day :D

at most level 2 and lower i pick my brass. depending on the match and who is shooting sometimes this is a group effort and sometimes just a couple of us. if just a couple of us, we keep everything we pick and diviy it up between ourselves. if it is a group effort and everyone picks, then everyone shares. it can vary from people only wanting their own brass back to cutting the pile between those who shot that calibre.

Thanks for the feedback guys, by the sounds of it, should be able to end up with more brass than what I came with.

You guys must keep this type of collection brass separate from your 'known firings' brass I would imagine?

depends oh how anal you are about your brass. myself if i am shooting new brass i will put my recovered brass (I mark all of my brass) into a once fired tin. after that everything goes in the pot and gets reloaded. HOWEVER, i chamber check all of my rounds before putting them into cases and marking them. if they don't chamber check they go into the reject pail. if so often on a practise day i take the reject pail and do draws and fires from it. about 90% of it shoots. the rest goes into the burn barrel and gets burned!

Like Walter said, it doesn't really matter to sort your brass from "donated" brass. It just matters that you inspect it and chamber check it like you would your own brass anyway.

I shoot .38 Super Comp. It's expensive so I take great pains to collect my practice brass (tarpaulin on the grass etc) but I case-pro and shoot the many-times-fired stuff in matches so it hurts a lot less than leaving once fired on the ground. As Sean noted; you can spend way too much mental energy and time that you should be using to pay attention to what you are doing, just to pick up a few bucks worth of used brass. Since I mark my brass, If I happen to notice a pile of my stuff sitting there on my way up range after patching I'll bend down and grab it as a target of opportunity, but I won't fret about it if I don't.

Either way, I don't have time to vulture through piles of range brass. Not worth the time or effort for me.

we have some of the best brass pickers down here , I don't waste much time picking up brass anymore (38 super was a different story but I'm not using it any more ) if some one picks it up and wants to give it back to me while I'm ROing or patching fine , but 9mm and 40 just isn't worth the effort for 120-140 brass at a match.
