stupid question

I just read an article in Handloader mag by John Barsness that fl sizing new brass isn't required as it comes sized from the factory already. He stated that by fl sizing you are working the new brass more than need be inducing early wear. I recently tried this on 50 rds. of 25-06 and they all fed/fired/bullets seated fine.
 
I read the same article, but I do recall that he suggested running the shells up far enough to size the neck only, as many new shells will have slightly damaged/deformed necks. I would certainly make sure they chamber before doing a whole batch.

This topic comes up with the same regularity as the topic of getting live primers out of a case.
The primer topic always splits about 50-50, between those of us who just push out the live primer and those who think the practice is dangerous and won't do it.
The sizing a new case also splits about 50-50, between those of us who never size a new case, unless it is noticeably damaged, and those people who always resize and trim a new case.
My take is that when we buy Remington brasss, for example, it comes out of the same machine that supplies their loading equipment that makes the ammunition they load into little boxes and sell to the shooters.
Does anyone think our little press on the bench that we screw dies into, can do a more precise job of sizing the brass, than can the huge, prescission made machinery the factory uses?
I don't think so.
 
I don`t as long as it isn`t deformed. Inspect new brass for defects then load and fire form. I rarely full lenght resize cases except for revolver loads.
 
The only brass I never resized is Nosler Custom Brass. I made a visual inspection on them first and then started reloading. Everything turned out fine with measurements, firearm, accuracy and at the range.
 
I resize it, because the last batch looked a little worse for wear.
I then shoot it 4 times with neck sizing only, anneal, full lenght resize the 5th time, repeat.

100% correct. The only time you have to size new brass is neck sizing to round-out the case mouth because sometimes they get bent in the bags during shipping. I find winchester and remington brass bad for this. You NEVER have to FL size new brass.
 
I neck size all new brass, just for uniformity. Then I trim to minimum length. Then I de0burr flash hole. Then I uniform primer pocket. After that, I shoot, neck size only, don't go for high pressure loads, and never trim again until they get too long. I only clean out the primer pockets to get out any primer residue that might be left from firing it, punch in a new primer, charge it, seat it, fire it. I usually get between 15 and 20 for '06 based cartridges, and 7-10 for my .303s.

This is exactly what I claim. Resizing new brass just takes one cycle from it's useful life.
I have never resized new brass and never had any trouble with it.
Of course, if any were visibly damaged, it would be different, but I have never come across any damaged new brass.
