stupid question

I've got an older (not sure how old) Winchester 1400, in half decent condition, but I find it not as useful as I would like with the 30" full barrel it currently has and I'm not really looking to spend another $200.00 on a new barrel for it. If I had the local smith chop the existing barrel to 26" and thread it for tubes, can I shoot steel out of this for waterfowl? The tubes that I have that Iwould want to use are not a winchoke thread, does this matter? The tubes are however good for steel (wilson precision extended ported tubes for remchoke).

Thanks, and I hope I don't come out of this looking too stupid!

Can your local smith do it is the question? Has he measured the barrel and decided he has the correct size tools to do the job?

An option would be to have the present choke altered to a Skeet II diameter (Bew=tween improved cylinder and modified). This should be quite inexpensive compared to a choke tube alteration and much stronger.

Not much choke restriction is required for steel shot to make it pattern well. Too tight a choke distorts the pattern and shortens the effective range for steel shot.

Only $100 to have it cut, new bead drilled and tapped plus threading for chokes? Thats a killer deal.

I agree with Lee. Who is your gunsmith? That is around what most smiths charge for just the threading for tubes. Are you sure he included the shortening of the barrel in that price? Guntechs suggestion will do the trick for you for waterfowl and should work for most small game as well, but you will have to live with the 30" barrel. The local guys are charging $50 to $60 for this.
