STV for a non collector?

*ahem* SVT *ahem*

Accuracy: Depends on the one you get. These are 70+ year old rifles that went through a war. Some are great, some are average, some throw lead "in the general direction of". The one I have I'm quite happy with, easily hunting accurate to 200+ yards, and I've shot it out to 400 meters (against paper) with a fair bit of success, enough to know that when I have a good or bad day it's about me, not the rifle.

For Hunting: I thought about it, but decided against it. It's a bit long and heavy, not the handiest rifle in the world. But then again, I have a number of other options in the safe for hunting. There are good 7.62x54R hunting rounds out there, and the cartridge is powerful enough to drop anything in North America, so it does have that going for it. But for a decent milsurp in the same price range that fires the same cartridge, I would lean toward a Mosin M38 or M44, or even a 91/30. Right now, I actually have an SKS set up as my deer gun, but am working on an M38 over the winter to potentially replace it.

There are a couple of guys around here who have hunted successfully with the SVT-40, and they can be great rifles. A lot of it depends on how lucky you get with the accuracy, which is difficult to predict just by examining the bore on these rifles - there's a number of other factors that go into an SVT's accuracy.

But if you can afford to risk it... Buy one. Hella fun rifle to shoot, coolest looking main battle rifle of WWII, in my opinion. And the supplies look like they're starting to dry up, so the price only goes up from here.

I remember you have issues with both your Mosin and SKS, have you sorted those out yet? They were pretty simple quirks that you had difficulty with, that's why I ask. Are you prepared to enter a slightly more complex platform?

The sks problem was solved easy and the mosin shoots, and the barrel looks good after switching cleaners , Just not sure how accurate yet. I got 1000 rounds through my sks and only 50 through my mosin. I find it hard to get use to such a long gun. The mosin is great for quick shooting sessions tho, Less cleaning then the sks. I will defiantly be keeping it and might buy another.

Good to hear. If the Mosin is a bit unwieldy, maybe look into getting a Mosin carbine next. They are much handier, and I actually find them more pleasing to shoot. Something I do with all Mosins is shoot them with their sling attached. I employ a handwrap technique which takes a lot of the weight off the front of the gun and steadies the rifle when aiming it. Especially with that tree branch length of the 91/30! lol
