Well after hearing of the su16fx nightmare I am thinking of picking up a su16 instead and throwing a fore end and grip on it to complete the AR look. problem is I cant seem to find the parts north of the border. anyone that has modded these rifles if you can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated! Im also open to suggestions for something else in .223 NR. I have the budget of the su16fx to work with.

Lol. Everyone thinks the $1250 is too expensive until you realize you will be waiting months for the AR stock (and then you'll switch the actual buttstock out for magpul), you'll have to buy the fore-end (who the hell knows when and where that will be avail), and have no threaded barrel. After cost and shipping and waiting and installation I'd rather have the entire package of the su16fx, which actually has iron sights (no plastic su16a/b/c garbage sights), a threaded barrel and a (####ty) optic thrown in you can sell or trade.

Wait for the dealers to get the 18" version, that's what I'm doing.

As for other .223 nr, imo nothing compares in terms of price point and philosophy of use. Mini 14? No AR mags, no thanks Jeff. The regular su16 wouldnt be a bad option at all. But again tracking down those parts to make it look and function like you want will be annoying and end up costing you more in money, time, effort and headache.

I just received a call from dealer ,who told me my su 16 fx will not be shipped.Said he didn't know when new ones would be here if at all.

strange, my local dealer has 4 on the way (or so he says) hope so I paid for mine in full!!!

I picked up the SU16F a few months back and instantly did not like the default folding stock, I managed to find the AR style stock at an outfit in Ontario and I modified a Tufforce FN-FAL quad-rail for my handguard. In it's present config it cost me less than the FX, but marginally. I still plan to cut crown and thread the barrel to take an AR flash hider. I'll see if I can dig up some pics of it tonight.

I'm in the process of buying su 16 and will try the mods myself.P&D told me yesterday that they don't know when and if su 16 fx will be available. These things are pretty scarce so I took what I could get.Any body know of anybody doing flash suppressed on east coast?

Sayoman , would apprise ate some pics if u don't mind.ty
Here's a pic of the regular SU-16F with the TuForce end adapted and a couple other small additions. Built this one for about the same price as the FX

So here are the best shots I could find, sorry about the quality.

Here's the overall build, minus the AR flash hider. That's a Magpul MOE commercial butt-stock. So keep in mind that the adapter kit uses a commercial tube.

A close-up of the handguard in it's current config. It takes a bit of modification to get it to fit but as you can see the result is a nice mono-rail. I may pick up some full length rail covers later. That's a magpul vertical grip, I may be changing that out for something shorter or possibly pick up one of those AFG's.

And as mentioned, I'll be cutting, crowning and threading the barrel to add an AR flash hider (or "birdcage") when I have the tools

Here's a link to the process for modifying the handguard: http://www.thektog.org/forum/f88/adapting-gmg-fal-forend-249565/

And here's a link I found for threading the barrel yourself: http://dragunov.us/misc/su16/sufs.htm

Some guys have even been modifying CASV assemblies which look very sharp from what I've seen. http://www.thektog.org/forum/f88/su-16f-casv-install-pics-250991/

For magazines I picked up a 10-pack of LAR-15 pistol mags from Questar and 5 wedge connectors from Wolverine Supplies to make up 5 20-round mags which work pretty well and the AR Stock adapter kit comes with a single-point sling plate so I picked up a single-point sling for the rifle as well.

@ zeuce: It's the exact same kit as the one they use on the FX. I got mine from Lanz Shooting Supplies, but at the time it was the only kit they had left so I'm not sure if they'll have any in stock. I did however get replies from Wanstalls and Reliable Gun saying they have them or will have them in stock by this time. So try giving them a shout.

In my opinion, for all intents and purposes, the FX is nothing more than the SU16C with all the overpriced Kel Tec goodies and an EOTech slapped on. The reason most people up until now have been making their own mods to the original lineup of SU16's is because Kel Tec simply cannot manufacture their own upgrades fast enough for the market (i.e. the AR stock adapter kit and the handguard with bottom rail). Check their website and they'll have little to nothing in stock. That reason and the fact that you can do your own build for much cheaper than the FX. All depends on what you want to spend really. There are some very interesting user made mods coming from the KTOG forums involving a selector switch as opposed to that push-button safety (which gets a lot of gripes) and an AR style bolt-catch/release. Would be nice to see these types of mods become a part of Kel Tec's accessories not too far down the line.

And contrary to what some have been saying on this and other forums, the SU16 family is a very popular range of .223/5.56 rifles, especially in the states. And because they don't commonly come with the AR style stock, the anti-gun hippies haven't focused on it much so there's non of that "Ooooo it's an assault rifle, ban it!" nonsense. Also, any of the issues the polymer receiver may have had back when the early models came out have been resolved, so don't listen to the "me gun went splodey!" crowd when it comes to deciding to purchasing the SU16F (or FX if money isn't an issue).

Best advice I can give, do the research, see what suites your needs/tastes and budget and roll from there. I don't regret doing the build myself.
