Sub2000 Modifications and ideas..

Wow, some of the complaints are rather lame. Who cares if the barrel doesn't guide straight into the lock tab.

If you don't already use a thread locker on all threaded mounts you're foolish.

Its a $600 plastic framed toy, its not a long term high round count rifle.

TOY?

You make me wish I had been keeping track of my round count. I just don't care enough to count. It's too fun to shoot to worry about round count.
Mine probably has close to 1000 through it now (only had it a couple months now), I know that's not a lot yet but it will be getting piles more since I have around 5000 more at home and I'm always looking for cheap 9mm. It still looks like new and is only getting better and smoother.

You are right that it's definitely not battle rifle quality and if there ever is a zombie apocalypse this thing will be getting left behind or handed off to someone expendable so I can carry my AR or RFB but it is far from a toy and I think that him pumping 20 rounds into a plugged barrel and still being around to laugh about it should show everyone that it's a lot better quality gun that many people give credit.
Mine is accurate and fun, it had been in a backpack strapped to my quads rack out 4x4ing and thrown around all over the place, it has been rapid fired without a break through all of my 10 mags and it kept the groups tight enough to pick off rocks and whatever else it was pointed at in the sand pit.

The only comparison I would make to it being a toy is that it is a lot of fun.

If anyone is looking for a cheap rubber stock tube cover PM me and I'll point you at the website I found that ships to Canada and has some neat TACTICOOL products (hint hint) ;)

Take care
Glad Luke S wasn't hurt:cheers:

^^ 1000, or even 6k, is not very high compared to what some guys on this thread put through their firearms.

Just sayin... One mans high round count may not be anothers.

The question is how will it hold out long term under continued firing.

:agree:
But I plan to find out, like I said. I have close to 5000 9mm at home and I'm always buying more. This thing is going to eat a lot of lead.
I treat it like my pistols, while the long range rifles are cooling the sub gets fed.

I was looking in the FAQ section of kel tec's website. Their projected life expectancy is 6000 or more. I'm sure they would last longer though

I'm in complete agreement with your post. My remark about a toy was in reference to its ability to take abuse and be modular like an AR or similar. I have sub2K as well, and enjoy beating the crap out of it. The sights are doable but not great, its a 100 yard gun at best and its been 100% thus far. As for round count, I'm with Kevin M, a couple thousand is far from high. 25K and up is worth talking about. Will the Sub2K survive that? I don't know, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it did.

If I had more time I would be trying to torture it alot more. I'm hoping to be over 5000 (estimated) rounds by the end of summer. My Glock 17 and 9mm 1911 also need to eat but the sub is going to get the majority of the food.

Has anyone tried any reloads through it?
I have a nice 124gr load for my 9mm 1911 I think I'm going to try soon. I'll do a little tweaking if needed to make it cycle reliably but once that's done the ammo supply is unlimited:)

I can't wait to wear it out and have to buy another one

I'd have my CZ Shadow less than a year (bought new june 2011) and I've probably got around 8000-10000 rounds through it... I've been holding off and on the s2k to see how they hold up to high round counts and what potential issues they may have. I know that a shadow slidestop is a potential problem before I bought it, but never had an issue. I'd like to know potential issues with the s2k and make an educated purchase. I'm not rich by any stretch of the imagination, so $700 for a gun I'm only gonna get 6k rounds out of before it fails in a potentially unfixable way or in a way not cost effective to fix would be bad. If it's a simple spring or such that needs replacing that is acceptable in my eyes.

Guys, if you don't blow it up it will last! That barrel is strong! The main spring and bolt are very heavy and solid too.

cr5, what 124gr reload are you considering?

Finally got the mag plate rail adapter, pretty comfy grip.. :)

OK, I gotta admit. That is a pretty cool Sub2000!

Still, all the goodies on it are worth 5 times what the gun *should be worth. lol

very cool though!!

Tonight, I've decided to start the project of installing my 5mW green laser with a custom switch on my Sub 2000... Redneck style! :p

I've started with buying a momentary switch and also cutting the cheap wires from the original switch of the laser.

I've re-wired everything from the small little circuits in the laser (for a better weld connection) to the installation of the switch.

I've machine drilled my laser aluminium frame and made treads on it so it can fit the original Sub 2000 screws from the handguard...

I've also drilled the handguard so it fits the switch.

So here's the result of the inner connections:

Here, picture is a little blurry, but laser don't touch the barrel at all... But it's a matter of around 1 centimeter (10mm) of spacing between each other:

I've reinstalled the handguard and tighten all the screws back...

And then, I've zeroed the laser to 10 meters with the adjustment screws... I would adjust it for 15 to 25 meters, when i'll get to the range this weekend:

And finally, this is what it looks like when folded:

Here is my attempt at a home made single point sling attachment.

Photo269.jpg

Photo268.jpg

The metal is 2 1/4" long and 1/4" wide, made two holes with a drill and rounder off the edges on a bench grinder.

And after a coat of primer and paint.

Here is how it looks like installed.

While I was at it I made two simple sling attachments front and rear, I think the turned out nice.

If you're thinking of doing one but it seems to difficult try making one out of wire, something like this.

Cost of the total project, 0 dollars, including the sling which is from a old bag I found

has anyone threaded their barrel ? what thread should i get it in 1/2 x 28 like a ar , or 1/2 x 36 like most 9mm carbines ? I found a flashider from questar that is for 9mm and i think its 1/2 x 28.

Hey Guys, i thought of another cool mod for my sub2k.. :)

It might not be the most practical thing, but sure as hell it looks great.. :)

I removed most of the rails from Red Lion hand guard to give it a slimmer look and installed a custom made rail insert just in front of the trigger guard.. It seems to be a great spot for a spare mag.

Clever spot. Never even knew these things existed, but nice looking rig.

Looks cool man. I did the sprung hinge mount for the red dot on mine and it works great!

Could you guys help me out please. Everyone keeps talking about "Vault" for work on these things. Who is this and how do I get ahold of him?

Always love your mods dmitri, these are old before my rail install but I came up with this. So i love my little sub2k almost as much as I love to play around and modify rifles. Im 6'2 and the LOP was just a little to short for me so I started to think of how I could put an adjustable buffer and Magpul MOE buttstock on it.

Of course the problem with this idea is the action of this particular rifle. It is a blowback design and the bolt, spring and buffer are all placed inside of the rear tube or stock. But I came up with a little idea and it worked out great.
IMG_2785.jpg

Started by taking a standar milspec buffer tube and cutting it down to a rough size I wanted to work with.
IMG_2777.jpg

Now the inside dimensions of the buffer tube are just slightly tighter that the overal diameter of the factory Keltec tube. So off to work with a file I went. I was thinking about boring it out with a drill but I wanted to get a real tight fit so a little at a time.
IMG_2778.jpg

The next little problem is that the Sub2000 buffer tube is actual held in with a pin running thru the factory butt pad.
IMG_2779.jpg

dissasembled
IMG_2780.jpg

My overal goal was to keep all factory parts un modified in case I wanted to return it back to its original shape. I had to come up with a shorter pin to hold the buffer so I cut down a bolt.
IMG_2781.jpg

Now here is where some of the picture taking stopped as I got excited it was all coming together the way I wanted. But next the modified buffer tube was drilled so that the pin can be removed for cleaning without any extra work accept to remove the butt pad.
IMG_2783.jpg

pic showing the buffer nicely tucked into the buffer tube

IMG_2782.jpg

Well thats pretty much it. Still waiting for my tube cover from "tacticool.com" should make the overal tube dimension look a little closer to dimension of the buffer tube. On to the next project gettng rid of that ugly forend. Magpul going on there aswell. And yes the adjustable trigger works. In its fully collapsed setting its a little shorter that stock and full length adds about 3"
