Does anyone know of a source of a smooth bore percussion kit?
I'm toying with the idea of a 20 to 28ga smoothbore single shot hammer gun. I'd prefer a traditional side hammer style over converting a modern single but my googlefu seems weak
 
I don t believe there are any available in 20ga.The closet thing to what you want is a Thompson Center new Englander but they are in 12ga.I use this investarms Gallyon and like it a lot but that is in 12ga as well.As far as a kit goes I know of no one who sells a 20ga percussion kitIMG_0524.jpeg

My last 3 attempts to order black powder shooting supplies from them have never made it to me. Fibre wads and over shot cards and nitro cards. I don't think I'd trust the system for expensive parts

That's sorta what I'm looking for. Just in a smaller gauge. Nice and light
 
Kibler has released a flintlock Fowler in several gauges. You could cut the pan off, install a hammer and a drum and be all set if your looking for a percussion variant. Personally I’d just get a barrel and lock and build my own from scratch though. That way you can fit the stock to you.

Making up a percussion shotgun from miscellaneous parts is a practical option. If you can find a 20ga barrel from a single shot shotgun, it can have a couple of inches cut off at the breech and a plug fitted. First muzzleloading rifle I made involved a Numrich Arms barrel, a Dixie lock and trigger guard casting, with everything else being scratch built.
 
Yes, the walls of smoothbore barrels are generally much thinner than those of rifled barrels, so soldering the lugs on is likely the best option. The wall thickness at the lowest lug is likely enough to allow for a shallow dovetail.
If you are going to do a build and have no experience, I recommend you purchase either Buchelle's Recreating The American Longrifle or Alexander's Gunsmith of Greenville County. Both excellent how-to books. The American Longrifles online interest group is also an excellent resource.
 
You would also need a main spring vise for the lock in order to disassemble it to inlet the lock in the stock.Also it would easier to purchase the barrel with the breech plug already installed as it would save you the trouble of fitting the breacplug

My father has a Thompson/Center Renegade Cap Lock Rifle Kit, specifically the .56 caliber smoothbore (Model 5266) that has been in his closet for over 43 years, partially assembled that I have no idea what to do with. I realize this post was made over 2 years ago, but it doesn’t hurt to try.

Colerain makes 36" smoothbore barrels in 20, 24 and 28 ga. They are half octagon so you could still shorten them at the muzzle. Pecatonica Long Rifle Supply sells Colerain barrels and has a nice stock for an English style percussion shotgun and I have built a gun on that stock for turkey hunting. Track of the Wolf has an "Alex Henry" English style percussion lock, trigger, trigger guard and butt plate of appropriate style. I have had excellent service from both companies with the provision that I have not placed any big orders in the past year or so. Never had any border issues with Can Customs....just the USD exchange rate these days. Your project is certainly doable.
