any of you guys know a good recipe for subsonic 223? i want to have a slower round with me when im out hunting coyotes.

im currently using h4895 and h335, can these powders be used for subsonic loads?

i would use it for rabbits and other small game when im out hunting coyotes. im using a savage model 10.

last time i shot a rabbit with a 223 it almost cut it in half.

is this a bad idea without a crono?

Any of the medium speed pistol powders will work. Start a 5 grains and work your way down until the rifle goes sub sonic.

You might be tempted to use a heavy bullet, but slow speed measn slow RPM and you coudl run into a stability problem. First shot on paper will tell you the story.

Lots of neck tension is critical for consistent velocity. I take the decapping stem out of the sized brass and re-size, so there will be maximum neck tension.

I have developed loads for various canned rifles and have always found it a tedious process. Sub sonic is not difficult. accuracy is the problem. A bunny at 20 yards might not be too bad.

Load the bullet backwards so that the center of mass is forward in flight, even then accuracy might be minute of station wagon. Lube on the bullet could prevent problems related to bullets stuck in the bore. Ensure the bullet has left the barrel everytime you press the trigger. On the other hand you could load between 12 and 1700 fps, have minimal pelt damage, and decent accuracy out to 150 yards.

I have experimented alot with subsonic and cast bullets with a .300 Whisper benchgun, trued 700 action, Gaillard barrel, Jewel BR trigger, etc. This caliber was made for subsonic, however accuracy increased as I sped things up. I could never get the accuracy at 1050fps. that i could get at 1600fps, must be a stabilization thing. I tried every powder out there and best subsonic results were with AA#9(same as H-108), known for this use. So if you can find AA#9 you might want to try that and if you can't get it to shoot good, you may have run into the same stability problem!!
