Substitute for 3” Federal #4 Buckshot (41 pellets)?

Hello:

I received a call last week from Cabela’s / S.I.R. regarding an order I had placed last summer (July/08) for 10 boxes of 3” Federal #4 Buckshot (41 pellets). I was informed that my backorder could not be filled as the product was discontinued by Federal. Cabela’s had suggested a substitute of 2 ¾” #4 buckshot (27 pellets?) which I declined. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a reasonable substitute for this Federal load. I am hoping for something with a similar pellet count of the #4 buckshot that will give similar performance out of my 12 gauge Remington 870 Express Turkey gun with a Carlson “Dead Coyote” choke. This load will be used for hunting coyotes in the fall / winter months. Thank you for your assistance with this matter.

Regards,

Chizzy

Remington lists the same kind of load, 12ga. 3", 41 pellets of #4. Index number is 12HB4. Winchester also lists a 3" #4 load, Cabela's has it on their website as Supreme XX Magnum Turkey. I don't know why they wouldn't just try and sell you a different brand?

i have the same choke and shot it with my mossberg .there is a shell in # Ts MADE JUST FOR YOTES i can not remember were i got it .check the carlson web site i think thy recomended it DUTCH

Is it the Hevi Shot "Dead Coyote" load you are referring to? I have heard of it; however, I have no experience with it. It might be worth me looking into. Thanks for your time.

dead coyote load will probably offer the best results, its also very pricey though. If you have any old LEAD BB shot, they work awesome on yotes too. My uncle had 7 boxes of old remington BB nitro LEAD shot and it worked wonders on yotes, he stopped using #4 buck until he ran out, cant get anymore of the BB nitro.....

A good substitute can also be #2 or BB in lead as was mentioned.
Heavier the pay load the better.
Within reasonable range they are devastating because of pattern density rather than diameter of shot size that # 4 buck offers..

Hello:

I did a quick cursory search of a couple of online stores (Cabela’s and Wholesale Sports) and was able to find some #2 3” lead shot listed; however, no luck with 3” #4 buckshot, Hevi Shot - Dead Coyote, or 3” lead BB. I will keep looking. Thank you to everyone for their suggestions.

#4 shot Vs #4 buck shot

you are confusing your shot sizes. #4 shot is a bird and small game shot the size of a match head.....#4 buck shot is about .32 calibre and an excellent coyote medicine due to the limited pelt damage..
