So last night before heading out to my CORE class, the wife says; "there was a gun you wanted to buy right" I'm thinking there are several :D

So she says, "Well when you pass your CORE I will buy you a Gun"

WHAAAAAAAAH?

Awesome! So I'm driving and thinking what I should buy... She has shown interest in wanting to try shooting, and to learn gun safety etc. as there will be guns in the house... So I was thinking I'd buy a decent .22 to use for plinking, that she could handle and have fun shooting (hopefully)

I will be inheriting a .22 semi auto that I shot as a kid, so I don't need another semi auto (well not right now ;) )

Here is my dilemma: I want a tube magazine with a wood stock. Sounds simple right?!?!?

Well why does one not seem to exist!!! The closest thing I can seem to find which looks EXACTLY like what I want is this:

http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/22WinMagnum/983.asp

Only problem is, that its a .22WMR which would be fine, but with the price of 22WMR rounds it ain't as economical for plinking...

Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction?

What I'm looking for is fairly specific; tube magazine, bolt or lever, pistol grip walnut stock...

And Ideally, I'd like to stay within a reasonable price range $300-400 max hopefully...

May just have to join the dark side and buy a synthetic stock <<shudder>>

That one is a 22 WMR, WSM stands for winchester short magnum and is not made in. 22 cal (although a WSSM is.) I would personally go for a CZ 452 or 455 for a beuatiful wood stocked gun that shoots very very accuratly and will still be there when you have grand kids.

Well, for starters, I can't say I've ever liked tube magazines. Actually, let me back up...what hell are "CORE" classes?

:)

Back to the question. I used too own a Winchester 9422 (not in that price range I don't think) and sold it only because I couldn't stand the tube mag for target shooting/plinking. Just a pain. If I was hunting, only a handful of shots, etc...then fine. In fact, I like the look of them more. However, I don't know any serious shooter who doesn't own, or is planning to own a .22lr bolt-action. I have 3 of them, and a bolt .22WMR too. My next .22lr will also be a bolt action, and it will be a CZ. I'm big Savage fan (have 2 bolt action Savages)...don't expect the CZ to be more accurate, just missing the action/fit & finish/walnut, etc.

My vote~CZ. If you want to save a few bucks, then a Savage with a laminate stock. Both shoot well.

A cooey model 60 fits the description... But would be old and used. Otherwise the marlin 981t is an excellent option, very accurate and the last of the tube fed bolt action rimfires on the market.

I almost forgot... Depending on how handy you are with wood finishing, boyds sells unfinished replacement stocks for the model 81c which can cross over to fit the 981t with minimal fitting.

The marlin 981, and 981ts is tub fed bolt action. In 22s, l , and lr

981T and 981TS are synthetic stock.

I have been looking at all the Marlins lately and have noticed the same thing the OP has.

One option might be to buy a Marlin XT-22MTW (Walnut, .22WMR) and a Marlin XT-22TR (Synthetic, .22 S, L, LR) and then swap the stocks.

Keep the .22 action/barrel with Walnut and sell the .22WMR action/barrel in the synthetic stock...

But somehow this goes beyond what most consider an appropriate way to accept a gift from a loved one ;)

BTW, the XT-22 series is a direct replacement of the Marlin 9xx series. http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/xt/XT22.asp

...Otherwise the marlin 981t....the last of the tube fed bolt action rimfires on the market.

Not quite. Marlin now offers a new line of tube-fed bolt-action .22 calibres, in .22 S/L/LR and .22WMR;

XT-22TR (Tube, Synthetic)
XT-22TSR (Tube, Stainless, Synthetic)
XT-22MTR (Magnum, Tube, Synthetic)
XT-22MTSL (Magnum, Tube, Stainless, Laminate)
XT-22MTW (Magnum, Tube, Walnut)

(See link in previous post)

There are many parallels between these and the 9xx series... except the XT-22 series have the new, adjustable trigger system and considerably lower MSRPs (not much more than the current sale prices of the discontinued Marlin 9xx series (as someone else pointed out to me).

Does your wife have a sister?

LOL, yeah she does actually, but she's married too... Gotta snap women like that up!

Hmmmmm.... ORRRRRRR, I could buy a 22MTW, and a 22TR, swap stocks... ans then KEEP the 22WMR!

Get her a Henry Golden Boy. Slickest smoothest action on a lever you'll lever come accross and of course ... tube magazine, very easy to load, very reliable and just a plain great shooting and awesome looking firearm. You (and she) won't be sorry.

IDK about that. The Browning BL-22's throw is only 30 degrees or so. Very slick.
