"Give me the name of the instructor for the RPAL course... I might as well at least have a license if there are going to be guns around the apartment, just to make things easier..."

to (after taking her out shooting for the first time)

"I'd definitely do that again!"

"You're already on the waiting list for EOHC right? I'm going to put my name in too."

to (after doing the EOHC safety course)

"I want to do Cowboy Action Shooting!"

She's now at the point where there are like 6 guns she wants to buy (.22 target rifle, .22 target pistol, 2x single-action revolvers, lever-action rifle, and shotgun (the latter ones for Cowboy Action)). And she doesn't even have her RPAL in hand yet (still processing with CFC)! :eek: :D

My wife has a great understanding and acceptance of my toys (guns). She doesn't mind them as long as I don't mind her shoes.:D

Back to the original question: You could buy a Marlin 981T or TS (I prefer the TS for its no hassle maintenance) and swap a NOS Marlin 81 stock from Numrich or get a fancy laminated piece from Boyd's. But I like my 981T with synthetic just the way it is. Solid and accurate piece of shooting iron.

I have one of these from WSS but paid more for it last year. Even thought it doesn't have a wood stock (which was also my preference) the synthetic is not bad and actually grown on me. It feels solid and full-sized.
The irons are terrible IMO but with a cheap 3-9x40 scope this rifle is very accurate! 17 rnds of .22lr=lots of plinking between reloads.
At $160..... get one.

That's great. Not to many get into it for whatever reason, but if it's something you can both do and enjoy, that's great!

Well I'm glad to hear they're solid and accurate. Was thinking of a savage as well for affordability, but I'm leaning towards marlin. Despite the fact savage makes some accurate guns they're still considered to most people as the "Wal-Mart of guns". I know a guy who has a savage .22, and people will ask him what kind of .22 he has, and he'll reply "It's a Savage"... reply is usually "oh...."

Yeah I'm thinkin I'll just go with the synthetic, and see if it grows on me... If it doesn't I'll look at swapping it out with a wood stock.

Now my debate is, go with the 981T, or the new XT-22TR? Although Wholesale doesn't show the XT-22TR, Only the TSR which is $239, so the TR should be cheaper without the stainless barrel...

I would second the Henry. My brother had one. Not sure if it was the Golden Boy or not, only shot it once, but that was a nice little rifle. Light and bloody accurate. I would buy one if I ever decided to buy another .22

There have been some quality control issues with the "new 981T'" aka XT-22T since going over to the Remington plant. The trigger on the XT-22T is supposed to be nice but there are mods you can do on the 981T. eg Papermate spring swap. I did the swap and it lightened the trigger but I have since gone back to the stock spring because I liked it better.
The micro-groove barrel is boringly accurate. And unlike many low cost rifles with pencil thin barrels, the 981T has a what I consider a nice mid-weight.
For $160 it's hard to beat!
 
GO .22WMR !!! You will never go back to silly LR garbage again. Sure, its a little more expensive, but the quality is much better. You can still find 50 rounds for under $10 here and there. The top stuff goes for $20 a box of fifty.

Simply put, you can do more technical plinking and slightly larger game hunting with it.

Go .22WMR......you wont regret it.........i promise you !

Hmmmm, good to know... I'll take a look at both if possible... To damn bad I don't have My PAL in hand... $160 is a great deal!
 
Tube feeds are a pain in the A. Try to load one in the truck you have to pull the tube out 3 feet in front of the muzzle without hitting the roof of the truck or knocking your beer off the dashboard. A clip is the way to go. Just snap it in and go.
 
Savage with a wood stock. Or CZ, going up the ladder...
And a mag is better if you have only one gun because you can reload for each other.

Wait for the other shoe to drop and she tells you she's heading to Hawaii with the girls for a couple weeks.Also make sure there are no jewelry store flyer's laying around.
