For me, custom = 1911, pretty much exclusively.

I love my G4 Glock 17, but wouldn't spend 5 minutes of thoughtful time on it (other than shooting), and wouldn't ask or pay someone else to do so.

Seriously, I don't even clean it. It's awesome.

TDC, Where did you hear that the CBSA is getting rid of the PX4? It was a really stupid choice in the first place but I'm pretty sure that they have a long term contact with Beretta. I shudder to think what they will replace it with as their first contract ruled out Glock's and Sig's right off the bat.

Maybe the RFP will make more sense this time, given that, unlike the last one, this one will be written by people who've actually fired a pistol. Is CBSC still beefing up their background checks by requiring that applicants have a PAL?

Getting a PAL is no longer required; as you said it was just a cheap way of getting a background check but, CBSA officers have a higher security clearance now and that sort of lazy backhanded approach won't fly anymore. I was just curious about the "dropping the PX4" statement because that's the first I have heard of it. I shoot with a couple of their firearms trainers at my range and I would have thought that they would have mentioned something about that as they are not very fond of their service pistol choice.

They had some really embarrassing issues as a service with the intro of firearms - reports of officers not qualifying for a PAL due to criminal history etc. The trainers initially were RCMP guys, but even they didn't write the RFP - some guy in Ottawa did, while seated at his desk - if you know what I mean.

Oh I am quite familiar with how that works but I still suspect that the RCMP had a lot to do with that acquisition. Because CBSA upper management has almost zero law enforcement experience they relied heavily on what the RCMP was telling them they needed. Perhaps the RCMP was using that opportunity to do a little research to find a viable alternative to their own pistol which will probably need replacement in the not too distant future, hence the 9mm recommendation. They were probably shocked when they failed to take into account that the morons in Ottawa would actually choose a totally untried, piece of crap pistol and were hoping that the M&P would get the nod. At least they found out that they should not buy the Beretta but I doubt that they would be foolish enough to do so anyway.
I would still like to know if there is any truth to the dropping the PX4 rumour though. Seems like wishful thinking to me.

Certainly seems a bit soon - not all of the officers who are to be "armed" with the PX4 have been trained yet, have they? - Incidentally, the RCMP had initially intended to have the Beretta 92 as their first service pistol, but that fell apart with the cracked slide issue - that's why a few municipal forces initially switched to the 92 (Vancouver for example) - they expected the RCMP to go with the Beretta.

lolll, my 1911 did not cost me more than a typical G17......

Sweet deal. I had a 1911. It cost way less than my glock. It shot great. ! shot it better than I shot my glock. didnt malfunction much [much]. But one day
I was there looking at all the external safety's, ammo cost, other gizmos and the crappy takedown and said "fvck this" and sold it. Bought another glock. Maybe one day ill get another 1911 in 9mm.

I have a hard time owning luxury items.
