Suggestion for a trap gun for my wife

Berreta al391 loaded with super target (Winchester shells) 1 oz load at 1150 fps my 14 year old can handle this combo very easily.

To try the sport have her use an auto loader, preferably one with a shorter or "youth" stock. You want a balance of enough weight to dampen recoil, but be light enough for someone with limited upper body strength to handle and swing comfortably.

Make sure she leans into the gun. If she leans back the very bottom of the stock, known as the toe, is the only portion of the recoil pad in contact with the shoulder. This concentrates the recoil in a small area which leaves a bruise. In addition since this point is well below the line of the barrel, it cause the muzzle to want to rise in recoil. This produces cheek slap, which can also be painful.

For heavens sake don't give her a fixed breech gun and a heavy load. Don't give her a light 20 gauge fixed breech gun and expect low recoil, even with target loads. The light weight of these guns makes the recoil worse than that of a 12.

Start her right and you may have a shooting partner for life. Start her wrong and you will turn her off like a light switch.

All the info provided above is right on the money ! I have watched women who started with a semi auto 20 gauge step up to a semi auto 12 gauge in their first season. A semi auto built to their frame size is the answer. Have fun getting out and shooting with your new partner !

saw a Winchester SX3 that had a shorter LOP stock on clearance at WSS which was a really good deal but was too short for me so I had to leave it behind

FYI, the newest line of semi-auto Berettas for trapshooting (Classic Trap or Parallel Target) is the A400 series. There is a parallel target version in this line, but it's not available in Canada yet. There is no "classic trap" version in the A400. Hence your best bet, as noted above, is the 391 series, probably a reduced length stock.

I suspect, however, that it will prove a challenge to find one of these guns.

You could settle for a Remington 1100 semi auto trap gun. Much easier to find, cheaper too.
