Suggestions for a "big and slow" caliber?

Big and slow plus 45 calibers were mentioned in the OP so 458 Win. Mag. and 458 Lott could be considered.

I've taken 1 Bull Moose with my 458 WM so far using the Hornady 500gr RN IL at 1900 fps muzzle speed. Range was about 80 meters and the bullet hit quartering at about 1700 fps, broke both shoulders and exited. 1 shot DRT. Never seen so much blood-spattered bush behind where the Bull was standing plus the large blood pool beneath it. That was one big ugly channel it made.

My 458 Lott will perform the same or better but have yet to try it out. It's on the roster for next season. Again the limitations of being able to consume only about 1 Moose per year. ;)

Either are just the thing for big Bear shoulder busting.

Well..... I may not be a number pushing, drt only, shoulder crunching table quoting expert... but I wager my Ruger M77 RS carbine in 358 win would suit the OP just fine..... heck, if he has a 243 and a 308, he wouldn’t even have to switch shell holders in the press.. :)

My vote would be for the 9.3x62, you could always load it down to x57 levels if you wanted to to make it slow as you like or shoot cast. For a 200-yard moose, even an 8x57 would probably cut the mustard without much shoulder damage.

Brad, where in Glengarry are ya from? I'm just north of Cornwall myself.

I've used a few 8X57's over the years , great round and works perfectly on Moose and things , even if it isn't in the big and slow category .

Thanks man..... for a ruger collector, this piece has a very interesting history.... to my knowledge, a little over 700 were made for jerry’s Sports in the USA...... and they were made completely by accident.....

Took a dandy little whitetail with it his year......

So I went to WSS sports today to see what was left on the final day. I went about a week ago, and almost bought 9.3x62 dies for half price. Fast forward to today, and the 9.3 dies are gone... However, they had 358 win dies at 80% off!

So I have some rcbs 358 win dies now. Lol Not 100% sold on the caliber, but for $12 I couldn't say no. Also couldn't say no to 7mm WSM dies but that's obviously for a different idea all together.

I just graduated from university the other week, and the job market is slow over Christmas, but once I get a real job in the new year I'll have to start pricing out a 358win rifle and see if that's where I settle.

What a dummy, eh!?!?!?

Still working on the replacement... in the meantime the .350's are getting a good workout... at least it went to a good home.

If it makes you feel any better (and it likely won’t), every time i pull it out of the lockout, it’s like pulling excelsior fromtbe rock..... lol....

Harvested a dandy little whitetail with it this year, but much more is in the plans.....

You're right... it doesn't... ;)

Here's a group pic of my personal medium bores. Hopefully I can come across a 9.3x64 aswell.

This is my old zastava I used for a season. Got a couple bears with it, a moose, and a buck with that load 285gr PPU, worked as expected.

My struggle with the 9.3x57 et al, and I spent far too much building a Satterlee 9.5x57 (.375 version) so I’m not averse to the concept, is they don’t kill any better than a 7x57 or .30-06. Nor do they truly offer a greater range of responsible shot angles, trajectory and recoil change for the worse mind you. They’re nice if you want to shoot cheap cast however, but that and keeping the loading bench standardized on .375 are the only benefits I’ve found so far. Will of course keep testing.

I'm not surprised that you found the 9.5 x 57 or .375 x 2 1/4" a little wanting. It's biggest appeal
is the actions that it will fit in. Ballistically it would be about the same as the 400/375 that got properly blown out of the water 100 years ago by the 375 H&H. ;)
