Keep the 3-9x for now - it's plenty of scope for coyotes. In the meantime, save a few extra bucks and watch for a Bushnell 4200 4-16x in the EE. You should be able to find one for about $350 if you're patient and they are fantastic scopes for the price. There's 2 available right now for $400, which is at the higher end of the scale but still not a terrible price.

Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14X42 w/ballistic plex reticle gets my vote....used them on coyote rigs for years!
I actually went from a 4-16 power variable down to a 3x9 because it was a big scope, and the high end was next to useless for practicle coyote hunting out to 350yds, my max range. I am back to a 3-15 power because I got a new rifle, and because the new scope is the same size and weight as a 3x9. I never felt hampered by a 3x9......... Ever! Save your money. That burris is decent glass.
