Hello all,

I'm new to both CandianGunNutz and to the sport of target shooting. I recently received my restricted firearms license and have been going to the range for a few weeks now. The range I go to has club firearms for use but I'd really like to purchase my own. The club guns that I've had the opportunity to shoot were a Ruger Mk II and another autoloader that I can't remember the name of. I liked the Ruger but didn't enjoy the other pistol at all. I've also handled a Smith & Wesson K-38 Masterpiece. I loved the look and feel of the Smith and I'd really prefer a revolver over an autoloader. Perhaps my opinion would be different after using some newer models of automatics?

Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions about brands/models that would be suitable for a novice shooter. I'd prefer to go with a .22 first because of ammunition costs and because I am new to the sport. However, if there are pistols/revolvers in other calibres that I should be looking into as a first-time firearm owner, let me know.

As well, if anyone has a good used revolver (single or double action) for sale, please contact me via PM or email (address below).

Thank you,

Scott

Hey Scott, well I'll jump in with a reply and hopefully others will add their two bits giving you a range of opinions and advice, which is no doubt what you're looking for.

My first hand gun was a Browning Buckmark (.22). They have several models but they are all the same on the inside, just different barrels, sights, grips etc. Mine has performed flawlessly for years, I still shoot it regularly at the range. I start with it then move up in calibre but I shoot WAY more with it than any other gun because of the $$ of ammo (even though I reload for my other guns, you can't beat the cheap cost of .22 ammo).

So that's my pitch, Browning Buckmark, had several thousand rounds through mine and the only problems were self inflicted goofup's on my part. Nothing that was an issue due to wear or the like. I lost the retaining clip on the return spring rod when cleaning it and seeing as I was ordering that tiny little part I also ordered some pieces that I think may one day wear out (recoil pad etc.) so I have them on hand if/when they do.

x3 on the Ruger lineup of deuce deuce pistols. They are a fantastic entry gun, cheap to shoot and easy to maintain, besdies you can always trade one in towards the price of something a little bigger like a 9mm. Welcome to the sport and CGN, any questions you have, somebody here will be able to answer

Welcome to the board and sport.

I am going to take a guess and say that you are a member of the RA centre?

Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome and the advice. I will do some more research into the Ruger and Browning line-up of .22 pistols. I'm still going to try and find a nice wheel-gun though!

Actually Fremen, I've been shooting at the range in Arnprior. The main range master there was my examiner and the members of the club have been very patient and helpful. I haven't officially become a member there yet but as it is a bit far for me to travel, I may take a look at the RA Centre. I don't know what the facilities are like at the RA Centre, but I've heard it is an excellent range.

If anyone has some suggestions regarding ranges in the Ottawa area, it would be appreciated.

Thanks again,

Scott.

If you liked the K38, there is a K22 for sale right now in the EE. PeakXV is the seller. I don't know him or his revolver, but you might want to look at the listing.
