Wondering if someone can point me in the right direction. I bought a used Marlin 1894S. When I bought it, it was equipped with a 4x scope. I want to go back to open or peep sights but the rear sight was removed to make room for the scope. Just wondering what sights were available and what ppl would suggest.

Things to keep in mind:

nothing huge and cumbersome (williams)
maybe something folding so if I sling it in the bush it doesn't get knocked off
some what inexpensive($60-$130)

Any help would be great.

I don't consider the Williams, or any other receiver sight cumbersome, I have several brands, they are all about the same design.
Maybe you should look at lymans folding tang sight. Gives you the longest sight radius useable for all positions. The problem with floding tang sights, is that they are always in the folded position when a quick shot is offered.
I prefer the Williams (aluminum) or other (steel) reciever sights such as Redfield, or Lyman myself, they are about as strong as a sight can get.
There are some new ghost ring sights on the market now, give them a look, they are smaller than the traditional reciever sight.

Adam if you watch Ebay Marlin 1894 tangs pop up all the time, your looking for a Lyman with an "E" stamped on the bottom or if it's a Marbles it'll have an "M2" on the bottom, Redfield doesn't list a receiver sight for the 1894 Marlin.

I tried the XS Ghostrings, didn;t like them.

now I have a Williams FP rear and Red Firesite Front on my 1895MR. LOVE THEM.

carried this rifle all spring and fall guiding, never found it cumbersome. screw in the apature for hunting, screw it out for a big ghost ring.

Williams are ugly but light...I take them all apart and spray paint every part flat black and reassemble..they will look much better...Lymans, etc.. are nicely made (or were till the 70's) but can be a bit heavy....on a Mauser for instance, they throw the weight just a bit to the rear, right over the trigger and can make a well balanced gun suddenly seem awkward even though they haven't added much real weight. Lyman used to make a real nice click adjustable sight for the Marlin 336 but stopped in the late 40's I think (then they went to a cheaper version) ...but that good sight will still surface from time time at gunshows...I picked a minty one up at a gun show in Maine a few months back for only ten dollars...It was really dirty and the owner didn't know what gun it fit...I cleaned it and found that it was in excellent condition, the finish protected by the grease and grime. I'll be popping it on my own 336 in a few days.

I have a Williams FP rear, Williams FireSight front sight on my Winchester94 - and I don't find it cumbersome (although it is perhaps a bit inelegant compared to a sight that doesn't hang over the side). Great to readjust when switching loads, though.

thanks everyone for the advice, I'll do some hunting around now that I know what to look for.
