I'm looking to get a new 270 for deer/ bear hunting, there are so many good guns out there I'd just like to get some informed opinions on what's great and what's not so great. Right now I'm shooting a rem 700 bdl ss dm in .300 winmag. I'm going to keep that, just want something a bit "lighter" for my shoulder. My criteria is: synthetic stock, detachable mag, ss/barrel , good trigger. One of the ones I'm looking at is the savage "axis", any thoughts ?Thanks for your input!

The new FN built M-70 Winchesters are worth looking at, and a M-70 in .270 Winchester is pretty classic.

This.

It's quite likely that most options out there are going to shoot accurately enough to kill big game with. The new FN built M70's are a good combination of accuracy, solid construction and good good looks. Do it.

Any sporter on the market will provide performance you want these days. I am partial to the savage lines as they are really easy to tinker with, modify, improve, and they perform very well at the range. I would say it better to consider a 116 FXP3 SS package model based on your request. It is simply the best deal out there IMO for the potential tinkering options. But for sheer cost it would be hard to beat the axis. I'm just leery about the plastic clip parts. The 116 clip and bottom parts are made from metal. Just my 2 cents....

A lot of people really like the M70 Extreme Weather. The one I bought didn't really suit me, but I can see why they are well liked. And none of the M70's have a detachable magazine. I only mention that because the OP listed that as one of his requirements.

IMO stay away from plastic stocks in favour of fiberglass or laminate, even if it means having a floorplate. Cheap plastic is nasty and flexible.

270-280 both are good choices, easy on the shoulder and great on game.

My experience tells me to go to various hunting stores and handle a variety of makes and models.
Some were along the way you pickup a rifle and it will "feel" almost familiar. It will fit balance and look right. Buy it and enjoy.

There is no such thing as a perfect rifle, but there is such a thing as a perfect rifle for "YOU".

Thats my thoughts on this matter.
Have fun and straight shoot'in you gunnutz!

I like the Remington 700 Dm's in 270. The CDL SF DM's are really nice rifles. (Custom Deluxe, Stainless Fluted, Detachable Mag)

I've posted this previously but fairly recently I filled the 270 caliber void in my 'selection' of calibers,, TWICE. I went the used route though and I purchased a Husqvarna model 3000 from Ted, then happened across a Sako model A III that belonged to a friend.

Sako 85 Bavarian in 270, shoot like a dream, the recoil is very tamed and the rifle is a real nice piece of work... JP.
