I was thinking of mounting an optic on a 583 series Mini 14. I could just put on a 2-7 scope but wanted to try something different since I’ve never had a red dot before. Not sure how to mount a rail with the integrated mounts so would appreciate suggestions from anyone who has done this before and whether you liked it or just preferred a regular scope set up. Thanks.

Look up the Ultimak rail, get a 2moa aimpoint and you are good to go!

I ran a mini-14 set up just like this for several years. It was an awesome rig and super-capable on the gong range out to about 200 meters. Beyond that magnification was a definite advantage, but inside 200 there was no steel plate safe.

I was looking at the Vortex Sparc II but will give the Aimpoint a look. Apparently Ruger also made a rail to fit on the mounts. I’ve sent them an email to ask about it. Thanks for the suggestions.

I had one the past two years I purchased new and put an Aimpoint PRO on top of of the factory supplied rail. I removed the Aimpoint base and used a 30mm ring instead to get the sight to sit low enough to be able to sight through the optic without having to add a riser to the comb. It worked really well and I liked the compactness and light weight of the red dot sight as opposed to a scope. Some magnification would have been nice though for busting coyotes but for plinking it was great!

When I get around to it I’ll put a Fastfire III on the Ultimak rail on mine. Makes for a nice compact carbine.
