hi all, looking for suggestions on an 22 that i'll eventually teach the kids with & will be fun for me to shoot in the mean time, looking for something reasonably accurate out of the box, accepts hi cap mags (with the 10/22 issue i'm staying away from those rifles) in the $450 range, if anyone knows of any already with a scope on it even better, thanks in advance!

$450 with or without the scope? If you're scoping it anyway, I'd suggest a Marlin 795. Plastic stock only, inexpensive, etc. Sights on it are poor, but if you're scoping it (like I did mine) it hardly matters. High capacity magazines can be had, but I personally don't find they add to the experience. Extra time loading=extra time not shooting, big and clunky etc. My own sensibility. :) Anyhow, one of the most accurate 22 semis you can get under $500, and you could get 2 of them for that amount. Choosing one will leave extra $ for a better scope. Light enough for the kids to use. If you want to see an interesting review, go on YouTube and search for Marlin 795+Nutnfancy

If you want to spend a little more, you could get a stainless steel 795, or a Marlin 60 with a wood/laminate stock. The model 60 feeds from a tube magazine, the 795 external box mags.

$450 was for the rifle i figured i had lots of time to add a scope since kids are a few years away from their first range day lol any recommendations where to find the 795 in ss? i like the look of them

If I'm over $450 into my 795 rig, it isn't by much... Bought the rifle on sale for $175, Boyds stock I got on one of their flash-sales (can't remember the price), Dip Trigger and Trigger Guard, bipod, Bushnell scope (3x-9x) was $60 on sale, and not bad (but might upgrade at some point).

Have a half-dozen of the Magpul 25 rounders (which would put me way over the $450 total investment), which are easy to find.

More accurate than my 10/22 ever was, my 10/22 became a safe queen long before the mag ban because of my 795.

And this is what a 7 shot group looks like at 25 yards when I confirm zero in the spring (25 yard zero gives me 1/2" high at 50 and 3/4" low at 75, which is a nice flat arc for popping gophers in the field).

Only thing wrong with the 795 is the trigger, but you can get a Mcarbo trigger kit for that.I'm going to try and get one if the Hawke rim fire scopes for about $200 and see what that's like.Good reviews
I have the same Boyds thumbhole stock on mine, but heavy for a carry gun ,but ok for bench rest or prone shooting.I did fill my plastic stock with non expanding foam and that's an easy fix and a great improvement over the hollow one

I've heard reasonably good things about the Remington 597... Haven't shot one personally though, so I can't comment from experience. Cabela's has them on for $270, or $320 for the heavy barrel version. 30 bucks for a 30 round mag.

Personally, I would get a 10/22 and wait out the bullish with the mag cap. there's nothing wrong with the 10 round mag for teaching kids. if anything it is probably better, as ammo tends to last longer. "your turn" comes quicker too. If you are dead set against it, and want a semi, the marlin is the way to go. i feel they are smoother, and will eat just about anything i feed it. i have both a marlin and a rem, the Remington has not seen the outside of the safe in over 10 years. the marlin only came out when the 10/22 was in getting a new trigger. i had forgotten how nice that rifle is, but the Ruger is much more easy to own in terms of parts, hop ups, information, and reliability.

My Rem 597 lost one of the plastic retainer parts from the end of a pin in the trigger group:

This totally disabled the rifle. I was able to repair it but lost a lot of faith in the rifle after that. When it worked it worked well and it was as accurate as I wanted but I just grew to distrust and dislike all the plastic in the trigger group.

I second the Marlin 795 and Marlin 60 recommendations. 25 round mags are available for the 795, but as someone else said they are bulky and clunky.

I also highly recommend the vintage Savage 6A / Stevens 87 types of rifles. They are highly accurate and are fun to shoot.

Really like mine. One of the smoothest semi's I've ever shot and accurate too.

I've had nothing but problems with my 10/22. Jams on all sorts of mags. Not particularly accurate. Not sure if I just got a bad gun or it's a problem with most 10/22s.

+1 for the 795. Mine works better than my 10/22 and for almost half the price.
Some of them will have stiff triggers though. Trigger quality is uneven
