Suggestions for a versatile scope for a CZ452?

Hi all,

Looking for some input here. I decided to pick up a CZ 452 Varmint in .22. I may shoot it at our indoor range as close as 20 metres, but what I really want to do is practice longer range shooting with it. So, what I am hoping to find is a scope with a 30mm tube and target turrets, somewhere in a higher mid-range variable (maybe 3 or 4.5 at the low end and 12 - 16 or so at the higher range) that will also focus down to say 15 or 20 metres. My Leupold MK 4 for example, won't focus on our indoor range. Any suggestions?

I've got a brno #2 and use a $79.99 Tasco 2.5-10 X40 AO. I find it to be very satisfactory. It holds well out past 100yds and is a pile of fun. Is it as good as a Leupy? Absolutely not.

But my belief is that pushing a .22 LR past 100 yds runs you into issues of bullet instability, and I'm not convinced that a .22 can be predictable much past that distance anyway. If anyone has arguments to the contrary, please wade in; I'm happy to learn.
 
A reasonably priced scope with great optics is the Mueller APV 4.5-14x40 AO. But it lacks the target turrets and 30mm that you were looking for. Its a nice scope on a rimfire or 223 (which is where I am using one). I'm sure you can find those features, but it will likely be a lot more money for a 30mm tube target turret AO.
 
Bushnell Banner 4-12 X 40 AO. About $130 at Wally's, good scope for the money, excellent scope for an accurate .22 RF.
 
I think I'd steer away from higher powered scopes. I did some work at the range last year with my 3-9 on my 30-06 and found that at shorter ranges all the high magnificaions did was make me a bit twitchier because the target jumped around more and I started to anticipate my shots. With the short range of the 22, it may cause you more problems than it solves. Also the 30 mm tube will really limit your choices of scopes. I think Grizzlypeg is on the right track; for a scope like what you're suggesting a 223 or maybe a 22-250 may be a better match.

It's really small and compact, but also has the side AO. It focuses down to 10 yards, and when I use the short rings I looks amazing on my CZ 452. The only problem is that I have to remove the rear scope cover when want to use it because the bolt hits it. It can be resolved by using higher mounts.

It's a cheapie scope, but it holds zero and adjusts fine, and is good for anything under 100 yards. Which is good because I wouldn't be shooting past that anyways.

Thanks guys. As I mentioned, I might shoot the rifle indoors but what I really want to shoot it at the limits of the round. I spoke to Eric Brooks about this and he did the same thing a while back with one of his 452s. I don't know if the bullet would become "unstable" in the sense of basically unpredictable past 100 yards, but at 150 or 200 yards, I imagine it would be unforgiving. Brooks' feeling was that shooting the .22LR at 200 was similar to shooting a .308 at 800 in terms of windage adjustment. Anyhow, I haven't tried this but that was the reason for the 30mm scope. I want more internal adjustment because I know it will be dropping like a stone. Along the same lines I plan on using rings that will provide additional MOA. I think most of the scopes mentioned are probably great but are 1" tubes. So far, I have been considering the Falcon Menace because they specifically indicate that the parallax will go down to 10 yards. The Bushnell 6500 series looks very appealing but I'd probably spend less and get the Falcon. The Center Point looks interesting. I have never seen that one before.
