Suggestions for an all rounder rifle

Could get a m305a in 7.62x39

Savage makes a 7.62x39 scout rifle thats not bad, i think frontier firearm has it on sale to.

Used xcr-l's can be had around $1800 to $2200 and with a light barrel arnt to heavy. Pistol mag compatible, so ten round magazines are avalible

What has stopped the BCL 102 from making the list? There are many AR10 parts available, many of them pop up on EE, $1200 BCL/AR10. Some have had flaws, maintain your rifle, shoot it. Seems like the most afordable/fitting option for .308 besides a M305. Your first list contains a few .223/5.56, are you considering or going to remove those? If not maybe consider a WK180c, type 97, type 81,cz858? Very few will match all the above if wanting a 1/1.5k, NR(black rifle), .308 besides the bcl or a M305. All budget depending. Give us a $$$ number to work with! You could also consider a cheap .223(type97) and a .308(M305) and have them both to your door for under $1500 with ammo. Type 81 was an awesome rifle and I will buy another. Loved cheap steel cased ammo, accurate with irons, I love the Soviet 30cal 7.62x39.

Because its a poorly made firearm with poor parts compatibility. Even for $1200 it's not worth the gamble with the track record that specific firearm and company has. The m305 is also known to have flaws, but at least they can be addressed by the user for the most part and the rifle is also less than half the price used.

Given all the bad press the BCL has received, got me curious. Got a good deal on a used rifle. It has been shot a bunch. Owner suggested it ran well so going to make it a base for some testing and mods.

Running the bolt with dummy rds, all seems to work just fine. Using some C products (I think) 10 rd mags and they all seem to lock up nicely and cycle dummy rds. I have certainly had feeding issues with other types of NR AR10s so this was nice to see.

Haven't fired it yet but that will wait after my competition season is done (nice winter project).

Modifying a few things to suit my tastes and see how it performs.... The bolt gas rings were not tight so that was swapped out right away.

Otherwise, got no complaints... so far.

M305 would fit your bill. Thought about JR carbine in .45? Maybe not suitable for moose by certainly lethal for bear and deer. Just need a mag pinned to 5.

Agreed. I love my M305, enjoyed tinkering/improving it.

Since I just punch paper with mine, I reload using a reduced charge, just enough to reliably cycle the action. Easier on the shoulder, easier on the brass, and easier on the wallet.

Not sure I'd want to hump it around in the bush, though. It's heavy.

Here it is, weighing in at 9 lbs dry:

There's also the Troy 102 which should be arriving very shortly. Priced a little better than the Stag 10 but the only drawback is there's no solid information on how good they are yet.

That link worked for me no prob. Just fyi.

That FNAR competition is so freakin nice. The stock is surprisingly adjustable, and it doesn't kick much at all.

Mags are a bit on the steep side though, and takedown/cleaning is a bit more involved than usual.

Probably over-priced for what it is, and it looks a bit like it belongs in a pride parade; but still one of the nicest NR semi's available on the Canuckistan market, imo.

I'd buy another if I could swing it.

It's a tough decision in todays market that's for sure.
I have m14 rifles I consider all arounders but I also know the platform intimately and can perform virtually any work the rifle needs over it's lifetime to an expert level.
For tactical/hunting I prefer the rifle set up in an ultra light composite stock , 18.5" barrel with irons and with removeable 1x prismatic, or a compact 4x. on an arms 18 mount.
here is one with a night force optic.... the extra rails and bipod are easily deleted to save weight.

crappy pic but this one is my iron sight only truck/atv/camp rifle and is very handy.

.308 ammo is too expensive to shoot at the range, and have it be fun or affordable (bang!=$1....bang!=$1....bang!=$1)
mini 30 doesn't handle surplus ammo well (afaik) so that's not really an option for you either, given the budget constraints.

You need two guns.

Or he needs to start reloading:)

At least then its more like 40-50 cents per pew......

Sorry to side track the thread a bit, but weight has been mentioned a few times. How does weight compare between M305, Stag 10, BCL 102 and others. I have an M305 with a Vltor toprail/handguard and it is very heavy compared to most of my hunting rifles. It was very heavy before I added the Vltor rail, but I do like it.

Apologies if the OP was an amateur question, I’m not well versed in the modern rifles and I’m just getting into shooting somewhat recently.

I have a few guns that were passed over to me from my dad that I can use as well, but I was really hoping I could get around to buying a nice modern rifle that I could really call my own and enjoy.
Atm I have a Winchester ranger 30-30 lever, lee enfield no4 mk2, and a few single action shotguns in 12g and 410 3”

I definitely would consider a bolt, as it seems the semis are pretty pricey. I saw mention of the mini 30 as well, and heard lots of good things about the rem 700 that I could maybe build off of? I’ll be looking around for more options while I await acceptance to the EE and maybe find more inspiration.

In your guys opinion, what are the best platforms for bolt actions to mod if I wanted to? Or even build right off the action of a rem 700?

BUILD yourself a Stag 10 over the winter...the price this way is less and spread out over time and you can buy lots of nicely used Stag 10 parts for cheap when guys take off stock parts for aftermarket ones on their own build, TNA also sells many parts for a great price as well.

It is a bit heavy BUT it makes a great hunting rifle/long range shooter and even "tactical" rifle...add some GOOD irons on it to start, and a great sling (helps carry the weight) get an optic later. Make sure to use good magazines!!!

Bulk and surplus ammo is available for a decent price, especially if you buy it in bulk. Save the brass to sell if you don't want to reload...can get an easy $25-$35/100 for it depending on brand/quality and if it is processed and cleaned at all.

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried the AB arms mod x chassis for the Rem 700? Can you get them here in Canada? Are they legal here?

It really gives the rifle a look I enjoy and the price on it if I could get a well priced used 700 would be acceptable.
