Suggestions for an entry level pump action shotgun?

Remmy 870 is the way to go. I would go with the express MAG combo. You pay a few bucks more, but you have the option of shooting 3 1/2" shells. I bought one a couple years ago and can't complain.

BTW, this shotgun will be an all around use type gun.... Everything from deer, turkey and waterfowl, to skeet and trap. Hence a barrel combo package.

I'd say go with the Remington 870, but only because it will retain value better than the Mossberg will. Either one, when maintained, used, and stored properly will last a lifetime. It is possible to get a lemon in either variety.

What kind of combo are you looking for? Regular shotgun barrel + Slug barrel or a short barrel "defender" type? As a hunting weapon, slugs guns are not real versatile compared to a rifle. I'd say save your money and buy a rifle later on instead of slug barrel, but its a personal choice.
 
One of my friends just purchased a Mossberg 535ATS 3 barrel combo from Epps for $450+tax. It was full camo, 3.5"chamber, a 22" turkey barrel with sights, 28" vent rib, 24" fully rifled cantilever barrel, and it came with 4 or 5 chokes. I personally shoot Remington and Beretta but I saw nothing wrong with this combo especially for the price. I was considering one for myself. Fitment is everything in a gun and it seemed to fit me quite well. I personally have not got to shoot it yet but turkey season is just around the corner, and we have to get to the range to pattern it, so I'll try it out then. Good Luck Scott
 
I think all in all You'd be happy with any of the common makes. Mossy, Remington, Winchester ect.
They have all withstood the tests of time and I know people who own them all.
Each spouting how they think their make is the best and how they never have problems ect.

I happen to own yet another 870, I love it. It is a little heavy compared to other shotguns but its also heavy duty with its steel reciever ect.

Both Rems and Mossys have lots of aftermarket parts available, but I would have to say the 870 beats it slightly on the issue.

Don't forget the Browning BPS as well. They have bottom ejection which offers lots of benefits as well and I'v never heard any complaints about them.
I have never owned one though.

Ithaca's are another nice choice with bottom ejection. They are very light, reliable and simplistic in design.
I have shot many rabbits with my Ithaca M37.

Anyway I don't know if I made it harder for your or not, but just remember there is alot too choose from and they are all good in their own ways.

Some just offer more aftermarket support ect.
 
Mossy or remington 3 inch. the 3.5 is not needed, there are many threads on it too, From what I have read from people who know what they are talking about your wasting alot of extra lead or steel and powder for nothing which all translates into $$$$$$$$$, plus a slightly longer firearm.

The only way I would go with 3.5 is if it was already in a combo package gun like the 535 mossy that was readily available and then I'd probably look around for the mossy 500 combo.
 
Digger,.... Thats the Mossy combo i just played around with a couple of weeks ago.... My friend just bought that and he liked it quite a bit! Especially for the price.
