Suggestions for first 22LR rifle in bolt action?

I'm interested in getting my first 22LR bolt action with magazine primarily for knocking off gophers and I'd love your suggestions. Currently leaning towards a Savage Mk II - I can't find the Savage 19 or 93 in 22LR.

0.17 is fun too, but I just can't beat the plinking price of 22LR, so I'm pretty set on that. I've played with plenty of Ruger 10/22s but I just find they gum up so often I'm not interested - and I DO realise that its often the cheap ammo, not the gun itself doing that.

So - what would you suggest for an entry into 22LR?

Savage MK2 TR comes ready with a good stock.... Love mine....

I currently have a ruger American rimfire on the way from IRG.com.... But until I get it to the range I cant comment on it....

savage mkII with the accutrigger
i love my btvs 2, with a solid scope and match rounds i was able to shoot groups through one hole at 50. super accurate barrel, reliable bolt/ejection, ###y, nice trigger feel (imo)

The Savage 93 models are either .17 HMR or 22WMR. The Mark IIs are .22lr. Having said all of that, I'd get a CZ if I were you. (if budget permits) If you can find a 452 Varmint (out of production, but you can probably find one with some digging) I'd get that. If not, a CZ 455 Varmint. All that is assuming you're shooting from a rest. (heavy barrel) If not, then, I'd get a 455 American. Almost the same stock, just a sporter-weight barrel. The LUX is a nice rifle if you're planning on using the iron sights. If not, I think the stock on the 452/455 is better-suited to scope use. That's my opinion.

Here is the 455 Varmint; http://www.czub.cz/en/catalog/80-rimfire-rifles-cz/MS/CZ_455_VARMINT.aspx

If $ is tight, my second choice would likely be a Marlin.

this was my first one, left handed. left it with the wife. bought me another one i loved it so much

Having just shot my Norinco FS 522,I have to give it an unqualified vote of approval.Best trigger I ever had.Match grade chamber, heavy barrel and recessed crown. The ONLY thing they could have done better was use some decent hardwood for the stock, but do a little work on that and you have one superbly accurate fine rifle and you can't beat the price-$199 from canada ammo

I have no savage 22s but my wife has a Savage in 17 and while its a plain jane gun, its a good accurate one and i've always heard the same about the 22s. If you want to get one bolt 22, just get a CZ. Pretty hard to beat them for quality and accuracy.

Marlin xt with a wood stock. Heavy barrel, medal trigger guard, 7 round steel mag, Marlins version of an accu trigger, 10 and 5 round mags available, micro grove rifling. $200. Most accurate 22 in this price range, in fact one of the best balanced and most accurate in any class. Need I say more.

Really - a Marlin XT? And a Norinco NS-522? Ok, I'll have a good look over those. They weren't on my list. Thanks.
I think the CZ is going to be a winner when I have a few extra $ to buy the follow on to my first 22LR.

Thank you for this 22LRGUY: http://www.czub.cz/en/catalog/80-rim...5_VARMINT.aspx

The Description of the Super Match is as follows:

The CZ 455 ULTRA MATCH is characterized by superior accuracy achieved thanks to 12 grooves in the barrel which improve the rectification of the bullet´s trajectory.

They show all of the rifles as having hammer forged barrels but why do they not have the 12 groove version available as an alternative in the American and Varmint versions rather than just the LUX model?

I had a CZ 452 American and Varmint. I now have a 455 American and a Thumbhole Varmint coming.

With over 500 rounds through the American, it is finally starting to come into its own. With CCI MiniMags yesterday, shot a .75 and 100 yards.
That is better than some of the groups shot at 50. Bought it as a gopher gun and it appears to have the capacity.

Hope to be able to report some results with the Varmint by next week. probably with a T36 Scope for starters.

Depending on your budget, a Savage MkII is a good choice, or a CZ 452 if you want a finer quality firearm. The Ruger 77/22 is also a very nice choice, although it's higher price tag doesn't reflect a proportional increase in quality over the CZ.

Have four CZ,s, all are scoped with rather large scopes. Use them all for gopher shooting. For a treat look at a FS version. My 455 fs wears a Weaver V24. Gopher gun supreme.
