I don't want to bust-up a good conversation about powerful/expensive airguns, but by the sounds of things...I don't think your brother's worries will be over going this route. For starters, the air gun ideas being bounced around here will eclipse the cost of a good .22lr, and be a bigger hassle to operate/get ammunition for, etc. What he'll end-up with is a rig that his wife (clearly among the uninformed ) will probably think IS a firearm when she first hears it going off~PCPs are not quiet. Not to mention, the "make his point" comment of yours suggests that he's considering the custom/magnum airgun route out of spite...or to deceive her...or both. Good idea to ask a question in this forum, but if he were my brother...I'd be offering him some entirely different advice.

For starters, your brother ought to get down to the root of his wife's dislike/lack of tolerance towards firearms. Most of the people I've met who are like that know only what they see on television. (in other words, it doesn't come from any "real" bad/personal experience) Perhaps he should take her to a proper gun club and let her see real firearms being used in a responsible manner. Maybe even discuss the PAL course he took and review some of the safety considerations every shooter makes part of their routine. The older I get, the more I come to appreciate how short life is, and decisions like gun ownership aren't decisions I want anyone making for me~no matter who they are.
