Suggestions for my first hunting rifle

Tikka T3 in a 270 WSM with Optilock rings topped with a Leupold 3x9 is plenty rifle for most game in North America.

That's pretty well what I said at the beginning, except the rifle I bought was not the T3 but the Hunter Whitetail wood / blue (now extinct, i believe)
Leoupold VX II 3-9X40 with Optilock rings and bases, GREAT SET UP :)
Except forget the WSM stuff, 270 is all you need !!!

Sounds like the Vanguard is the ticket; a nice choice. Top that thing with a good scope and you're in business.

.270 Winchester or .270 WSM? I have a .270 Win and I really like it but if I didn't own one already I'd probably go for the WSM. Wouldn't have thought that just a couple of weeks ago, but now I do. The budget you set out with gives you plenty of room to cover the extra $6/box of ammo for quite some time. You may never realize, need or use the greater ballistic potential of the WSM, but if you have no particular reason to favour the .270 Win, why not buy the gun with more potential?

THAR YA BE
Bigbear has just listed F/S the rifle that you are looking for/being suggested that you buy:)

A Tikka T3 in 270 WSM in stainless, still in the box, never fired for $700:cool:
