Suggestions for reticle sight: AR15

Afternoon, all!

Was hoping someone may have some suggestions for a reticle sight for my AR15? I first bought a Vortex Spark I think it is? It's basically just a red dot sight with a 2x magnifier you can screw onto it. First off, the red dot is almost always distorted. I guess I have an astigmatism and that is messing with it a bit? Secondly, the thing sucks. Not sure what's wrong with it but for a while, the only way to turn it off was by pulling the battery. During shooting it would get dimmer in between shots and then brighten up after a shot. Tried changing batteries but no difference.

Regardless, I think I'd do better with a reticle sight that has better magnification. Do you have any suggestions for a decent one? Hoping to keep things around $500 if possible.
 
Depends on how much you want to spend, and what you're looking for - for variable magnification, the Elcan Specter DR is my AR15 favorite. For fixed magnification, TA11 ACOG, Elcan OS4, Elcan OS3 are my choices, in order of preference. All are pretty pricey.

On the less expensive end, given your price range, are variables (in order of my preference) like the Burris TAC30, Hi-Lux CMR, and Millett DMS, and fixed optics like the burris AR332, which I like a lot, and Vortex Spitfire, which I wasn't as fond of.

Hopefully the above gives you a starting point for some research :)

Good stuff, thanks Cobra! Lots to look through there. I think already I'm leaning towards either the Burris AR332 or TAC 30. I guess with either, you could buy scope rings with a rail to mount a small red dot site on if you wanted. That sounds like the way to go.
 
Don't need a rail or rings on the Burris AR-332. The riser is integral, and it already has an integral pic rail atop it so you can easily mount a micro dot like a FastFire. The "Tactical Pack" comes with both, but is over $800... It is a very handy little prism sight, and AFAIK it works for those with astigmatism. The reticle is etched, so it still works even if your battery calves.
 
Exactly what Phat said - the 332 comes with everything you need right in the box, and has options to mount something else on top, if you want to. Great little optic. Just mounted mine on my new shotgun the other day :)
