suggestions for shooting clays?

Hello,

Recently my interest in getting into shooting at clays has been increasing. I am looking for suggestions/opinions etc. in terms of a good shotgun for someone getting into this area for the first time. It will strictly be a range gun as I have no interest in using it for hunting or anything other than the above. As well I am open to a new or used firearm, not sure if that makes a difference to your opinion. Lastly.....I am looking at semi-auto only.

1. what brands?

2. guage?

3. size of shell/barrel

4. anything else i missed?

1. Beretta 391 (second and third choice Browning Silver/Maxus or Winchester SX3) 28-30 inch barrel.

2. 12 gauge. When you positively have to kill every clay target in the sky accept no substitutes. Subgauges are fun but start with the 12.

3. 2-3/4", 3 or 2-3/4 dram, 1-1/8 or 1 ounce, shot sizes #8 or #7-1/2. Larger shot and/or heavier shells are generally not permitted at most clubs.

4. Eye and ear protection is mandatory at most clubs. Have a pouch or a vest to carry your shells in. Don't worry about hitting targets as much as learning how the games are played. Have fun but if this turns into a lifetime addiction don't blame us. ;)

Thank you very much for the detailed reply. I had a look in the EE forums for the firearms you suggested....a little heavy on the price tag for someone just getting into it. Any other suggestions not a pricey?

mossberg 930. ellwood eps has the deer and field combo for $540 plus tax. Good semi for the money. You can just buy the gun for $500 without the deer barrel plus tax.
 
here is my 2nd time out clay shooting... the big guy is me with the sx2 and the small guy is steamwhistle with his 930... I still suck but practice will take care of that

Nice secluded spot....some ammo and a couple of sweets guns......makes for a great day outside.

Sail is opening up in burlington and they sell the baikal for 499 plus tax. Russian gun so if there are as not as many after market parts as the mossy 930. You can get a lot of barrels and other stuff. Price is the same. Baikal is a 3 and half hunting gun. If you are looking for a trap gun I would get a 3 inche semi. Also can buy the mossy at cabelas.ca. Ship right to your door for 30 bucks.
