Hey Guys,

Just found this forum, ton of information on here. Got my first shotgun yesterday and didnt do a ton of research on my part.

I ended up picking up a Mossberg 590 Mariner to mess around with at the range, took it out shooting today and killed my shoulder. I was hoping for some suggestions on a better stock.

Also if anyone has any suggestions on a tactical site that would be great.

If it's the regular stock, I would stick with it. perhaps you need to practice mounting the shotgun and holding it tight to the pocket in your shoulder. Lean forward, pull in to your body with your dominant hand, and push forward with your support hand before firing. It will reduce the felt recoil and muzzle rise. Don't buy anything, just shoot it stock until you feel operating it is second nature. Put some wear marks on it, and by that time you'll know what to add on.
 
Limbsaver recoil pad .Two sizes depending on the rear stock. If the length of pull is to short they do have a slip on model as well. Pacmeyer (sp) also makes a good model. Don't go with a pistol grip style as the ergonomics are wrong for one on a mossberg.Safety will now be out of position. Rem 870 does better when it comes to pistol grip style
 
Nothing increases felt recoil like a stock that is too long. The Speed Feed 590 stock is a good quality stock, but they come from the factory a tad long at 14" or so LOP. Most adults do well with a 13"-13.5" LOP. My suggestion is to send your stock out to someone who can shorten it up for you.

Next to gun fit, technique is the most important element in recoil control. Take a boxer's stance towards the target, and with the gun shouldered, shift your weight to your front leg which is bent slightly at the knee. The theory is that the recoil crosses your chest and goes down the leg which is to the rear. Muzzle flip is minimized, and the recoil impulse assists in cycling the slide as you role onto your next target.

Consider your choice of ammunition, 3" magnums and slug loads tend to produce the greatest amount of recoil, I've got some 3" 15 pellet 00 loads that are just vicious, so I use them sparingly. Sometimes high velocity high brass hunting loads are only a small step below the 3", much depends on the specific load. Low brass heavy field loads and skeet loads typically produce the lightest recoil. Low recoil slugs are buckshot loads are available, but these are best used on the range rather than in the field.
 
Learn to shoulder your shotgun properly, i had a 590 mariner and have fun with it, sold it to finance another toy but soon as possible i want another. Great shotgun and extremly reliable.

Thanks for all the advice and the warm welcome I will be heading to the range this week and see if I can get one of the instructors to teach me how to properly fire the gun.
