New guy who could use some opinions.

Looking at purchasing one of the following, or other in similar price range.

Hammerli Xesse
Ruger Mark III
High Standard Victor
etc.

Wondering about quality, reliability, accuracy, etc. (Best buy for the money)

I could use some feedback from those of you with personal experience with these and other pistols you may suggest which would make a good all round target pistol for plinking, etc.

Thanks in advance, WildWildWest:)

I must say I didn't even know that Ruger made a Mark III until I saw it in your post! No experience with that one but I do have a Ruger Mark II that I've owned for twenty years (can it really be that long?). It was my first handgun, and even though I own a bunch of centrefire handguns I still enjoy shooting it--I've even used it to win a couple of smallbore handgun matches! I've have had literally no jams or misfires with it, and it's very accurate as well.

I'm with LEF. The S&W 41 has a beautiful trigger! Nice gun, but may cost up to 700!

I had a SW 41 about 15 years ago.(bought from and sold back to Specialty Guns) A beautiful pistol. I saw one the other day advertised at rimfire central for $1100.00 US. I am assuming it came with both barrels and barrel weights. They are going up in price especially in the US so if you can get a good deal at $700 take it.

Thanks for the heads up on the S&W model 41 - hadn't even looked at that one - may be a little out of my price range right now, but something may come up in the EE that's a little cheaper than retail.

I had a high standard victor and it is a fantastic gun. I've never shot the others. Costs more than some mentioned, but they really hold their value. Gotta think of these guns like investments. Get a good one and you can use it for years, and if you take care of it, it holds its value. At least that's what I keep telling my wife.

I own a Hammerli X-Esse Sport model and I really like it. The Sport has an adjustable trigger down to 2.2 pounds which is where mine is set at, very smooth. The sport is more money than the standard version, I went this way because I didn't have to spend money on a trigger job, shipping the gun away, etc. But I am sure the regular Long and Short models are of equal quality.

This gun has sent all kinds of ammo downrange without even one hiccup. No FTF's, No FTE's, never stove pipes.

And accurate as hell.

It is a little light on the muzzle though, the Sig Trailside comes with a 3 piece weight set to add weight to the end of the barrel, the Hamerli comes with one weight, it is removable. I couldn't find a weight set for sale in Canada so I built a heavier one out of stainless and it works just fine.

Larry's Guns in the U.S. handle weights sets but they are pricy.

I would reccommend a Hammerli X-Esse to anyone.
My 0.02....

Anyone know where I can get a 5" barrel for the the model 41?

The 5 1/2" are easy to find... if you want a 5", you'll have to look hard, I beleive they were only available as an option. S&W collectors are always looking for them!

As for a good target gun, I would have said an IZH35, but Armrus is sold out... I haven't played with the Ruger MK3, but I have a MK2 that I seldomly used. It's a real accurate gun, tigger could use some work... Mine is not that reliable (FTE), eventhought I tried a whole bunch of different ammo.

The High Standard is a classic, grip angle pretty close to the 1911. just make sure you inspect the frame before making a purchase. I have seen quite a few with cracks underneat the right hand side grip.

My first target gun was a Vostok MCM "margolin"... Bought a used one that was manufactured in the 1970's. Good trigger, good sight... just a little to light for my liking. Armrus in Montreal as them on sale for $250. Which I think is the best bang for the buck in 22lr pistol.

I have since moved on to a Walther GSP...

Safe shooting,
Mike.

SW 41s seem to have a cronic jamming issue:( Ive got one and it likes the cheapest ammo I can find, not that theres a huge price dif in most .22 ammo, but just about every 41 Ive seen has had the same issue....but also cant be beat accuracy wise;)

IMHO

I haven't a ton of experience with the 'lil cal pistols. I recently aquired (mainly for my fun and to teach my kids) a Ruger MkII and(since center fire pistols are too much for them to learn on) which my eldest can shoot fairly well. I have shot ( in .22) both my MkII, a Norinco and a High-Standard. I like the MkII better than both the Norc and the High-Standard. Worked with less 'issues'. Anyhow, I am glad I settled on the Ruger vs the Norc or HS.

all of the pistols mentioned would be a good choice, My preference is for High standards and you should be able to find a good used one in the 500 to 600 range,

The Vostok was my first pistol and I have to say that "a little too light" is being excessively kind. I moved on to something better as soon as I could afford to. It weighs just about nothing and I find it extremely difficult to keep steady in precision and way to snappy in timed or rapid. I only use it if I am taking someone shooting who is incapable of holding a heavier gun for any length of time.
