I'am not terribly interested in "tactical" guns but would like to set up a m305 with a scope and such for range use and maybe a backup deer rifle. What parts do I need to make the gun reliable and effective. Show me yours or give me a shopping list, thanks in advance.

Start with Lazurus2000's sticky at the top of this subforum. Here's what I did:

Basic Norinco M14
usgi fg stock bedded with jb weld epoxy to give good tension at ferule to barrel band
recoil buffer
shimmed gas system
aftermarket recoil spring and guide
Smith 2024 steel scope mount
Burris signature zee rings
Burris fullfield II scope
Federal Vital shock 150 grain ammunition (ballistic tips)
very pleased with reliable functioning, accuracy and terminal ballistics on deer. I scoped the rifle because after some shooting with the iron sights I was impressed enough with the accuracy that I didnt' believe I could do it justice without a scope. I'm getting under 1 moa at 100, 200 yards with this ammunition. Double that for surplus ammo.

The only part I would say is essential, is a quality scope mount. The rest of it may well depend on how well your rifle functions.

Check the new sticky at the top of the page, posted by Laz2000.
It was a great learning experience, and hearing the 'M14 sing' was an eye opener...
To add to GP's list above, a recoil buffer (that M14 'sing' I mentioned...), if you're going to shoot w/ scope, else don't bother w/ a buffer.
Not necessary to shim your gas system, just make sure its tight ('staked', essentially), else you'll need to take that flashhider off, and this new load can prove to be abit of a challenge...

Consistent 1" @ 50yrds with cheap Winchester X-Super or UMC, 150 gr,
4" bipod from the bench.

I have not experimented with a more expensive ammo yet.

Here's my setup so far:

M14s $465
Smith 2024 scope mount $200
Faclon-Merlin 4-14 scope $430 (from Cyberk on this site)
30mm rings $30
Shim Kit $8
buffer pad $10
USGI Guide rod $10
-------------------------------------
Sub total $1,153

I havn't been to the range with it yet so I can say what the accuracy is like.
That's it, so far. The list will keep growing, gota feed the beast:eek:

Your looking for a back up for deer, your better off getting a Savage 10FP or a Remmy 700. Better accuracy out of the box and WAY cheaper in the long run, or get a 303 for about $200... One thing I've learned in the clinic at 45APCKINGS place is you really have to like this rifle to sink that much $$$ into it, especially for a back up... imho

I'll be hosting mini clinics or as they are now known "wet coast m14 support group" meetings  once a month in the lower mainland...... and Hungry has indicated he will be joining us in August. Not sure about the road tour though.
Get a copy of Hungry's clinic C.D.'s , this is the first thing other than the rifle that any M1A or M14s owner should own and understand..... before they make any adjustments to thier rifle.
As far as a project rifle..... this is the MAIN reason i like them so much, cuz i like to tweak and tinker, maintain, and in some way, personalize every firearm that i own. The M14S fits that bill nicely.... and it's darn fun to shoot too :D

To really answer that, there are several questions:
- What kind of accuracy and consistancy are you looking for from this rifle?
- What distances do you want to shoot at, at what distances does it need to bring deer down at?
- What kind of ammo are you going to feed it?
- What kind of scope are you going to mount?

If you can get yourself to one of Hungry's seasons, go for it! very good info, and hands on to boot.

My tastes are likely very different from yours, but here is what I've done:

- Box stock Norinco with a US fiberglass stock.
- Rooster 33 guide rod.
- tightened up op-rod guide.
- shimmed and timed gas system.
- ARMS mount & Merlin scope.
- Eagle Cheek piece and US sling.

Getting the gas system tuned is well worth it, regardless what you end up doing with it.
If you are keeping it as a back-up deer gun and a range blaster, I wouldn't bother bedding it. Hunting down and fitting a US fiberglass stock won't do anything except shave a bit of weight (I think?).
Scoping it is a good idea, but stick to a good mount, as others have stated.
