i am looking for a gun thats cheap to buy cheap to shoot and fun. i want a bolt action. any suggestions and help clearing up the questions would be great. thanx.

Sounds to me the Stevens 200 or one of the Savage package series will fit your bill. New gun and scope all set up should run you around $500. Or, watch the Exchange forum; there are good deals that pop up from time to time.

Good luck on your search.

good deals in the EE? like the $400 Stevens?

honestly you are better off just buying a new Stevens in .308, they are $300 brand NIB. its basically an accutrigger-less blind magazine Savage at a rock bottom price, and the Savage aftermarket accessories will fit it. they generall have excellent out of the box accuracy, and there are a bunch of tutorials posted here on how to refinish, bed and stiffen the factory synthetic stock if you wish to improve it.

for a scope you should really spend at least a couple hundred bucks, id recommend the Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40mm with ballistic plex. theres a deal on them now at LeBarons, for $300 you get the scope and a pair of Burris roof prism binoculars which you can also use for hunting and camping.

if you are really on a tight budget, and are looking at the cheap scopes, IMO dont buy anything cheaper than the Bushnell Legend series or youll regret it later on down the road. as a cheap scope, the Legend 2-7x32mm is not a bad deal. good field of view and eye relief and its pretty clear, i have one on a Mini-14 and wasnt expecting it to last very long but its held up through a lot of rounds, neglect and punishment -- and Minis are notoriously brutal on scopes (mine doesnt have a recoil buffer). this scope is $140 with club card discount at LeBarons or $147 at SIR mailorder. it is the CHEAPEST i would go, anything below this is just asking for frustration down the road.

You are correct about buying a minimum quality scope. I own a savage 116 weather warrior in .300 win mag. (I know the .300 is much harder on scopes than a .308 but bear with me.) I have owned or still own many .30 caliber rifles and have owned numerous "cheap" scopes. None of them lasted too long on any of my .30 calibers.
I would often go and buy a bushnell trophy or sportsman or tasco etc because I didn't want to shell out the extra money for a better scope. I would usually get about 4-6 months before I couldn't keep zero on it.
These were mounted on either my .303 british, .30-06 remington, .307 winchester 94, or my .308 savage. The reticles just failed internally or some other mechanical failure occured each and every time. I put 2 cheapo scopes on my .300 win mag and they failed within 2 boxes of rounds each.
SO IN THE LONG RUN, I SPENT WAY MORE BUYING CHEAP SCOPES and having them fail on me when I least wanted it to happen.
Then I picked up a bushnell elite 3200 and my problems went away fast. I got it for 260.00 and It is probably the last scope I will buy. Clear glass, durable, and recoil proof for real.
Spend the extra bucks and get a scope once only. Dont buy cheap stuff that fogs up, shakes loose internally, and isn't reliable. Buy it once, not several times.

stevens or savage or look on EE

the funnest gun I have for camping or plinking is my rugger 10-22 with 25 shot clip.. cheap to buy cheap to shoot ... just can't hunt deer with it

and I agree with sgt.rock get a good scope

or if you just want something cheap and rugged, get a Mosin Nagant carbine.

not recommended for those of small stature or who dislike recoil, the stock design and steel buttplate dont exactly make for a soft-shooting rifle :)

still, they are fun as hell. so is an SKS but for the retarded amounts of money people are asking for them these days ($600 for an SKS-D? :slap:) i wouldnt even consider them.

heres a fringe benefit to the Mosin carbines:

I think you have picked a good caliber in 308. Yes, you can shoot 7.62x51 fmj ammo through it, if you can find it at a reasonable price. I agree with the Savage or Stevens. I'd try to get the lowest price in a new gun (or good used) and spend the money on a decent scope and rings. I think you are going to need $300-$400 for the rifle, $250-300 for the scope and maybe $75.00 for rings and base. Of course you can spend more if you want, but that budget should get you something basic and dependable. Don't rule out a gun already scoped that you might see on the EE, I wouldn't turn my nose up at other brands if they are priced reasonably and are decent models.

What about a Mossberg 4x4 in said cartridge?

Has anyone got one and can give a quality report / review? I like the look of the laminate stock they show the gun with in the SIR catalog, that's the kind of stock I wished savage had offered at a reasonable price, say $100-$125 more than the base price of the plastic stocked guns. I've said it before, I'm not a big fan of the low quality of their plastic stocks. It will pass, with a little work with some sandpaper or file, but that's about all I can say for it.

The Shootist in St Albert is advertising one for sale in 300 Win Mag. But I have never laid eyes on one other than a gun rag that gave it good review.
If anyone's got one...Pipe up!

You said "cheap" too many times for me to even consider you a serious hunter. How's about a cheap used Nintendo ?

I really appreciate all your guys help. I am not gonna get my F.A.C renewal back for around 20 more days, i have to wait till then.

It doesn't say where your from, I just bought a Savage pkg deal (.243 with a 3-9x32mm scope) for under $450. Put just over a box of ammo through it and I love it. 4th round out of it took a nice coyote
