Hey all,
I'm looking to pick up a .22 as my first handgun, and I've narrowed it down to several of what appear to be the best (relatively inexpensive) choices:

- Browning Buck Mark (Not settled on a model)

- S&W 22a

- Beretta Neos U22

- Sig Hammerli Trailside/Xesse

I know there are some obvious omissions here. My Dad has a S&W Model 41 that I will probably inherit some day (and it's out of my price range). I'm not all that keen on Rugers in general unless someone can offer a compelling argument otherwise.

Can anyone offer any opinions on some of these choices over others?

I would recommend the Hammerli, Now Sig, shot one for couple
years and never had any trouble with it , as well as a 215 I shoot
now. 100% , will shoot any kind of ammo, usally Fed bulk pack.
The 215 has shot 6 boxes of that stuff and in all that time 2 misfires,
and both times it was dead ammo, feeding was 100%. The Xessa is the same gun , just lighter as the frame is alloy and not steel.

I would also recommend a good used Hi-Standard supermatic 104-107
series.
The Brownings are fine.
The U22 I would not recommened, from what I hear, thou I have never sold any, shot one and did not like it.

The S-W I con't comment on .
Best thing is try to shoot different ones and see what you like, Some ranges have guns you can rent and try.

Although I'm not old enough to apply for my PAL yet, I shot a GSG 1911 and really liked it. I thought it was a cool way to get that 1911 feel without the $1000 price tag. They handle identically... only minus the recoil :)

I have a Beretta Neo's U22 in a 6 inch barrel. Nice pistol, good weight, and has a top rail built in for adding a red dot if wanted. The grip is too small for me but my wife loves the grip and says it feels better than any other 22 pistol she has shot. It is also quite a reasonable pice around $400.00. For me I prefer a Ruger Mark 2 or 3, stainless in the bull barrel. Owned numerous Mark 2's and they all shot great with a little fine tuning on the trigger pull.

Thanks for the input so far. I think I'm leaning more and more to the Buck Mark, but the Xesse is also looking good. The possible fragility of the polymer magazines with the Xesse is a little troubling though.

I actually found a really good set of articles that answered questions about a lot of the guns.

Anyone have any practical experience with a trailside/xesse, or have any options on the best make of Buck Mark?

i was leaning towards a p229 in .22lr with a 45 x-change kit

but now damn that hammerili has caught my attention.
