I'm on the hunt for a short barrel 12 gauge over under preferred.

Mostly for plinking and using my Chiappa x-caliber inserts.
I've seen the lazer arms and maverik shotguns out of turkey but they don't feel like they would last very long.

What shotguns do you suggest would fit this roll nicely?

You are looking for the near impossible in a new over/under for under $500.00 that will last long term.

You have wants that don't meet the current market. It is not normally possible to find an O/U shotgun worth buying for much less than $2000 new. And a "short barrel" O/U shotgun is not matched to a purpose that most O/U guns are designed for. You are really in the market for a used, cheap SxS, or pump gun. You may luck out on a "Bubba modified" cut down O/U that nobody else wants, some have been put on the market now and then. I don't mean to be discouraging, just realistic. Good luck in your search.

What about an older used SxS? You can find a used European double barrel for the OP's price range, not sure on their suitability for heavy use though.

Yes, it's not clear if you want new or used. If you are considering used, as mentioned, you can find a nice Baikal over/under for under $500.00 and they will last for what you want. As brybenn said, just cut the barrels off if they are longer than you want. And yes, there are a number of older, no frills SxS'S you can find for under $500.00.

I have a Baikal and after some strategic polishing, it performs like a champ. Locks up tight and built like a tank. Still prefer the Browning for clay birds (not that I get to shoot those very much either lately).

A used Baikal is the only gun that comes to mind.

There is also the FEG over/under for under $500.00 but I think I would stick with the Baikal. I bought a Baikal a couple of months ago to have as a spare gun at the cabin in case someone shows up and wants to shoot pasture clays. It's in very nice condition, single trigger and ejectors and was well under $500.00.

there are a few used skeet guns that come up now and then but you can't be fussy. I bought a 27" 101 Winchester , for $450 last year, it is fixed choke skeet and skeet. I use it now and then for doves and woodcock.

This is true. You just have to watch. Until I read your post, I forgot that I picked up a very nice Winchester 101 this past January that is choked skeet/skeet. The gun hardly has a mark on it. I also paid $450.00 for it.

Tradex has dozens of used O/Us for under 500.00. Some are better than others. You won't get a new one for that price.

Yes they do. But most of what they have, have cracked stocks or various other issues. They can be found for under $500.00 without the issues that many of the Tradeex guns have.

Baikal are fine guns, just not pretty. I have a auto, sxs, and have had a few o/us. I kept the sxs with outside hammers and the auto is a work horse never stops. Some good used trap or skeet guns offered too. Keep your eye open, good luck.

For $500, a Stoeger o/u is perhaps the best you will get if you are looking for a new gun. They are owned by Beretta but is their discount brand and fit, finish and QC is not the greatest. Stoegers are obviously not made in the same plant in Italy as Beretta's and Bellini's but does share some of the same technology rather they are made in South America and I believe that their semi's are made in Turkey.

If you are looking for something used, a couple of days ago there was a Beretta s55 on the EE for around $500. I own a s55 and a s65 and they are great upland guns. Your standard upland fixed choke configuration (full top and mod bottom) but these are great guns because the s55 is the grandfather and the s65 the father of Beretta's Silver Pigeon.
