I keep kicking around the idea of a NR black rifle, but have almost exactly zero experience with them. I'd love to get an AR variant of some sort but I am not into restricted stuff, so they are obviously out. Options that I am aware of are: Benelli MR-1, CX-4 Storm, JR Carbine, Kel-Tec Sub 2000 and some others like the SL8.

To those of you with more experience, what do you recommend for a compact, reliable centerfire NR black rifle? It will be mostly for plinking.

Cx4 storm comes as restricted from factory. You need to add an aftermarket barrel to make it NR.
A brand new non restricted cx4 storm cost around $1500.

There is also tavor 21 which is $2700.
Robinson arms xcr which is around $2300 to $2600.
Cz858 which is $699.

Lol...I just read that the factory CX4 is restricted and was coming back to admit my error. Why is it that the NR Robinson Arms, Swiss Arms etc are ~$2500 and up, whereas aparently good quality Restricteds such as the Daniel Defence and like can be had for $1000 less?

if you have some money the tavor is a pretty compact 223 nr that uses ar mags. i just got one and although i puked in my mouth a bit over the price, i love it.

Lots of ARs limited RAs ... Hence the price

Yes, it looks good, but the price is quite steep. Well for me it is. I'll look into that one a bit more.

One of the factors is intense competition between AR-15 pattern rifles in the U.S. With everybody and their grandmother making them, the abundance of manufacturers keeps prices down. Robinson Armament is a small company, and they developed the XCR on their own, so they have to recoup the added costs of that. RA also makes the XCR with an 18.6" bbl specifically for the Canadian market.

As for Swiss Arms, they are crafted high in the Alps by mystical weapon-smiths, using only the finest materials, and only working during the full moon on the night of the summer solstice. (Translation: They are really f*cking well made. :p)

I want to capture this on camera. Do they also dip them in pure mountain spring water and christen them?

1899, my experience with 4 NR rifles MR-1.... Swiss arm.....XCR-M....Thureon Defence 10mm, if i had to buy one and have fun right away, the TD is fun but still is a short range proposition, the most would be the Swiss, everything is perfect on it, XCR-M only 120 rounds down the tube but it look very promising and the MR-1 if you can live with the ergonomics is just great, fun, accurate and very reliable... You cant film the Swiss, they'll distract you with toblerone and be gone before you get the wrapper open. I heard they dip them in magic, then roll them in sprinkles and rinse the excess with pure spring water that gets recollected and bottled. I heard it from a leprochaun who stole my watch so take it with a grain of salt.

To the OP:
The price difference really has to do with the market. ARs are mass produced like twinkies in the US while the other platforms are produced in lower numbers by smaller companies. The MR1 is a great rifle both accuracy and reliability wise. Its a Benelli. The ergo's are something else however. More like a tactical shotgun. The controls are very awkward and mostly out of reach from your trigger finger. Mounting optics is difficult. But like I said they are incredibly reliable plus they stay very clean. The bore doesnt copper foul much at all and the gas system stays pretty damn clean. It wasnt working for me due to the ergo's. The XCR is quite impressive. RA set out to blend the best features of the AR with the best of the AK and it shows in its super simple action and AR-like layout. Everything is nicely machined and finished, its no rack grade AR. Stripping it down is incredibly quick and simple. The new FAST stock is a nice piece. It locks up very solid with only a little play in the extension. Its 3 way height adjustable and has 2 cheek piece positions. My only gripe is the single QD socket under the folding mech is a poor place for a sling point, at least for me. I like the rear of the sling mounted to the rear of the buttstock and up high. All-in I feel its worth the money. Look at a comparable piston driven monolithic AR of good quality and it doesnt seem like such an expensive rifle.

Someone please make a "swiss arms like" pistol with mag "designed from scratch" :)
And a true free floated barrel + handguard for the swiss arms.
Then all things will truly be equal, and I will lug my SA out to a match 1-4 event.

The Kel Tec SU16 is a nice little non-restricted. Have one with the pistol grip stock and it gives you the AR "feel", but obviously not an AR. Takes AR mags as well so you can use the 10 round pistol mags. Price point isn't terrible if you can find one!
