Suggestions - Semi-Auto, Non-Restricted, 223/5.56 Rifles

Hey everyone,

Looking to buy a rifle, in the $1000-2000 range.
Has to be Canadian non-restricted class.
Has to be good for pest control, target shooting, and self-defense/shtf scenarios.
Has to be 223 or 5.56 that can take 223.
Has to be accessory/ammo friendly (choices, availability, etc)
Has to be relatively low recoil/low riser action.

A used XCR can be found for about $2000 and covers all the bases.

Bingo, XCR for the win. Skip the $1000 rifles and head right to the top of your budget. Lots of XCR's floating around at the 2G mark and down the road you can even add a caliber conversion kit to shoot less expensive 7.62x39.

XCR's will be your best bet, it will be almost the only option aswell. I would definatly get it if I was in your position.

i just built this for $1295 without optic and light. just took it out today and it shot 1-2 inch 5 round groups at 100m

If you buy an XCR the only accessory you'll need is Loc-Tite

While it usually hangs out in the red rifles forum, I'd say a 5,56mm CSA sporter fits your requirements at the low end of your price range. I love mine, and lots of accessories available. One small warranty issue, but trouble free since

Looks like the XCR is the way to go.
Like the Robinson XCR-L for example?
Changeable barrels would be amazing.
But might have to up the budget.
Any specific suggestions as far as non-restricted XCRs?

For just a bit over your budget, a brand new HK SL8. Heavy target barrel, easy MOA shooter with factory target ammo, takes AR mags (with minor alteration).

She is a bit forward heavy, but for my purposes (informal target work, coyotes to 300 m) I'm very pleased with mine.

What about reliable shooting with the XCRs? Some have said it can get snagged on various types of ammo. Or that it requires high-end ammo to avoid jams?

I have a Mini-14 and it's plenty of fun, lots of available options to pimp it out & they are VERY reliable. I would have to question the 1"-2" groups as mentioned above although with the newer 581 series that has the thicker barrel, blueprinted ammo and a trigger job, I believe it is possible.

The XCR is a whole other animal and since I got mine, I haven't had my Mini-14 out once. As far as reliability, it hasn't failed once in 2000 rounds with any type of ammo. I haven't used even 1 drop of lock-tite. I think the lock-tite joke applies only to the older releases and is a bit stale...

Never heard that one before, mine's worked well with WWB, Remington UMC, red and black box AM and my reloads. I broke mine in on the red box American Eagle and had 2 jams in the first couple mags and then perfect every time since. Turned the gas down after about 100 rounds as well.

Just picked up a Keltec su 16f, hope to sight it in today. will be fun comparing the mini14 and the csa cz58 my buddies have. Just needs to be minute of coyote at 100 yards or less.

So the Benelli MR1 is non-restricted, while the Mini-14 tactical is restricted?
And the Mini-14 Ranch is fine? If this is the case, our regulation system is seriously messed up!
