Suggestions welcomed for general purpose/deer hunting rifle

Lots of people will have an opinion on this, but I think I'll form my opinion around someone who spent their entire life around and using firearms. There was this Col. who thought a Scout rifle was the best general purpose rifle a man could have. It could hunt, it could target and it could be used in a pinch for personal defense (This was an American our rules are different).

Read about from a 3rd party (link below). I have the Ruger model and I can attest to it's accuracy, ease of use and super fast, both eyes open site acquisition. My scope is only 1-7x but boy is it a ton of fun. Pretty much outshoots my precision rifle which really irks me.

What the hell is that supposed to mean? I'm in Ontario, all hunting I will do will be under 100 yards. 7.62x39 is more than adequate.

while caliber is adequate the platform is not the best choice; weight, sights, safety design, all contribute to sks being less then good hunting gun, in a blind or tree stand you are ok but when pushing bush or stalking? i would not like to be next to you there. i love my sks, all dressed up and tactical, but that’s the SHTF/zombie apocalypse gun for me, and a cheap plinker, that’s about it

if i wanted a quality, affordable rifle with detachable magazines. I would just buy another sporterized Enfield :)

To anyone who is interested, I did just that. It's a 1920's well conditioned, well maintained Parker Hale sporterized. Good CGN'er Lawrence is going to assist with scope mount options, pics to follow.
