Suggetions for .338 Win Mag

338

I would never load my 338WM with lighter bullets than 210gr partition, your S.D. and B.C. in light bullets are low so at ranges beyond 200 yards their energy is dropping fast. The 210 gr at 3000fps plus is flat shooting and holds good energy to 400 yards or better if you shoot that far, i use 225 accubonds or partitions at 2950fps for everything with great accuracy and energy at any range i use it for. That is my exsperience and opinion in reloading one for 30 years, hope that helps you decide to at least to try those weights (210-225gr).

Thanks for the Results,1899. Glossy mags would be like hitting bone. The break-up of the Accubond is an interesting result. If you are going to knock the pins out from something,an X is the answer.

I seem to remember in some tests, slower velocities with the same size bullet had increased penetractions.

It was a screw-up putting the dry ones out. I had four boxes of them in the back of the truck for over a week, with plenty of rainfall every day. The boxes that were open had soaked magazines in them. What do I do? Grab the closed one. The box was soaked and needed to be taped up, but the magazines were dry. I'll go out and do it again with Partitions when I get a chance.

And the lower velocity = higher penetration...I've seen that too. In fact Nosler #4 has a write-up about the correct bullet. They test a .308 and a .300 WM with BT's and Partitions. The .308 out penetrates the .300 WM with both bullets.

338Mag load

I've checked out the cost of getting into loading and picked up the Hornady and Barnes Manuals (looking for lyman 48th edition and will pick up Nosler next week).

I've made up my mind with regard to loads for most of my rifles but am intregued with the options for my .338. I'd like to check out the 210 grain bullets, but am most curious about the lighter ones. Can anyone provide some input with respect to 160, 175, and 185 grain .338 bullets? Velocity seems awsome and grain weight is simmilar to .284 bullets, suggesting I might be able to load my .338 for those situations that I currently use my 7mm Remington Magnum for.
Try H-414-74.5 gr, with Nosler 200Gr, balistic tip bullets, Velosity 3100 out of my Rugger 338Mag, group .5 inch, [hot load br careful] Traper:cool:
