Usual story. Given a shotgun I can't find anything about. Marked "H Kessel Heidersbach Suhl" 12 gauge SXS Double triggers, can't identify choke. Fairly good condition and seems to be well put together. Grateful for any info. Thanks...Y

supposedly they are pretty rugged german shotguns

tradeex was selling them a while back, might still have some and some more info

I picked one up recently from TradeEx. They have lots of them for sale. Suhl is the region in Germany (formerly East Germany marked on mine as Made in GDR or sometimes DDR) where a great many firearms were made as their primary industry since forever and a day ago was metal processing. A lot of them were marked pretty generically as Suhl but there are some high end and very ornate branded ones from the area too. If I recall correctly, they were all made in the same Thalmann factory no matter if they were Merkel, Simson or no name.

If you take it apart, the stampings will tell you a bit more about year, proofings etc.

Thanks for the input. I've not fired it but it seems very solid - even a bit "tight" I'll try to decifer the marks but if that doesn't work I'll post a pic. Thanks...Y

The gun you have is related to modern day Merkel's - factory was split after war.
Previous poster was right - tradeex had a lot a while back and still has a few - prices ranged from 200-300 for the lower end sxs to a couple of grand for the nicer o/u models

They are ok guns. However, Tradeex is importing them from another country, selling them for $300.00 and still making a profit. This has to say something about condition/quality. Just know what you are buying.

I think TradeEx' prices are related more to Swedish laws, with a cap on number owned, rather than to condition/quality. Owner wants a new gun, obsolescent older guns get traded in. Low resale value in Sweedish market. Swedish businesses are pleased to move them in bulk for export. What would Cooey shotguns be worth here, if there was a cap on how many guns you could own?
