Suitability of 6XC for a Varmint Rifle

I have a 6mmBR, a 6xc, a 6 Creedmore and a pair of .243's - yes i like 6mm's. The 6xc brass from norma is ecceptional and works out to be 1.39 per case which is the same as Lapua in a number of other calibers that I shoot. I use the Berger 108's and find that 6xc accuracy to equal the 6mmbr and magazine feeding is as reliable as the 243.

Thanks for sharing---you are definitely a 6 cal kinda guy.

I used my 6xc with the standard chamber and 75 grain vmax without issues. 1:8 twist. 5 round groups averaging in the .4 Moa range, which is a little bigger than with 105 hybrid or 115 dtac.
No drama with accelerated throat erosion or anything.

Thanks for sharing---good to know the 8 twist worked with the 75 Vmax bullets in the 6xc---if I order a barrel I would go with a 10 twist if I can find one.

I would go with the 8 if I were you.
You'll find the 105's handy for windy Montana days.
Hell, I'm running a 7 twist now and it's not tearing the 75's up.

My 1/8 twist krieger chambered with a Manson reamer (.076 freebore ) works good with everything I've tried so far. N150 powder with 85 grn hpbt gamekings, 105 hpbt Berger hybrids, 105 hornady match and 68 grn Berger Flat base.
The hornady 105 are seated pretty deep for .025 jump but they shoot 1/2 min with 5.5 minutes drop from 100 to 400 yards. As the throats wears there is lots of room to move the bullet forward in the case.

I doubt you could do much better than a 6 Dasher at 600yds...being that they are pretty much the king of the hill in mid-range BR. I don’t shoot distance, but have several barrels chambered in 6 Dasher...mostly sporters. Even with relatively skinny barrels (#2 Kreiger) on a Stiller Predator action, mine give consistent sub 1/2 MOA 5 shot groups at 300M. Easy to convert a hinged floorplate set up to feed by cutting the back end off the follower and gluing a 1/4” spacer in the back of the magazine box. I have never tried one, but it would not surprise me if they would feed without modification from a single stack magazine? My deer load uses 32gr of H4166 behind a 95gr Berger Classic Hunter which gives 2970fps from a 24” barrel. I could easily exceed 3000fps with that bullet before seeing any pressure, but no need to hot rod a hunting bullet that when zeroed at 200M ...hits just a tickle over 2” high at 200M and less than 6” low at 300M. I have brass fired over 20X. Making the brass is really pretty easy.

A friend just had a Dasher built and it is superbly accurate---making the cases was a pain but after that it shot really well.
I use two presses ... one with a 6.5 mm expander button to neck up the 6BR case, and the other with a Dasher sizer to neck the to- end of the neck back down to 6mm ... creating the false shoulder. Including lubing the inside of the neck, it takes less than 30 seconds per case. To fireform, I use a max load for the 6 BR, with a .010 jamb which results in a well formed Dasher case. Foreforming groups would certainly be under 3/4 MOA.

I have a 7.5 twist in 6 SLR---it shoots 90 Scenars into nice tight groups. However, with 87 Vmax the bullets won't hit paper at 100 yds---suspect the jacket on the Vmax's are fragile and blow up or take off in some mad trajectory---velocity is 3400 fps---I checked with Hornady and they told me their 87 Vmax will take much more velocity that 3400---not so sure that I agree with Hornady.
My experience with the 87 Vmax has left me wondering about a few things---too fast a twist?---too high velocity for the 87 Vmax?---maybe something else like the tight neck on the 6 SLR?---or maybe 6 SLR ain't so hot a caliber---I bought it used and the previous owner used 115 bullets---always wonder when somebody gives up on what appears a great rifle.
One plan is to replace the barrel on the 6 SLR and make it into something else such as 243 Win, 6xc etc etc. Another plan is stick with the 6 SLR and try some different light weight bullets such as Sierras and see what happens---certainly this is the cheapest alternative. Another plan is to simply re-chamber the 6 SLR into the caliber of choice and hope the fast twist will work with light bullets such as Sierras
I had planned to submit a separate thread giving my results on the "disappearing" 87 Vmax's but looks like I have just done that.

The 6xc is a great round; we have had consistent success with this chambering! - it was designed to give 6mmBR accuracy and with a little more range and reliable mag feeding - We think the 6xc comes very close to filling the bill..

Today, Harley ( my partner / Co-owner of Insite ) shot a coyote at over 940 yards with the same 6XC we use in competitions. As far as 6mm chamberings go, it is incredibly hard to beat.

This was 1 shot / cold bore : https://www.facebook.com/harley.greene.71

6x47L would likely be my choice. Very efficient, minimal trimming, and Lapua brass.

Yes, I'm giving this serious consideration. I have a supply of 6.5x47 Lapua brass that I can re-size, also have a 6 BR barrel that has lots of life in it and can be re-chambered, and a friend has dies that are available.
I would re-barrel my Rem 40X from 6.5 Lapua to the 6 Lapua.
Gives me something to think about over the holidays.

You make your point with a bang. Ha ha.
Think I will go the 6x47 L way because I have brass and can get dies from a friend. Have to consult with my smith, of course.
