Summerland Long Range Fun Shoot 2008 - April 12, 13th

I understand the points being made about long range and so on. I usually experience an increase in accuracy myself when I'm talking about shooting, much like fishing. Trouble with shooting is that bullets make holes and you can't hide them too easily. In fishing the big one can get away and if no one saw it you can lie like crazy, part of the fun really... Still, I couldn't believe it at last years fun shoot. Some guy let me shoot his rifle and I whacked a small boulder at 1700 meters!!! Jeez, something I never thought would happen! Still can't believe it. I have talked about that with people at our club several times and they all look at me funny. Not sure whether I'm lieing or boasting I guess, could be true. But you and I both know there were guys there shooting way further out and hitting stuff. Someone offered me a chance to try the 0.50 and I didn't follow through. I still want to take a shot with one at 2000. I don't care if it puts me on my butt. If I hit something no one will ever hear the end of it, including the grandkids and the trap shooters at our club!!! One of the chores of all seniour citizens is to try the patience of the young'uns after all, and probably everybody else...not sure about the latter!
My shooting goals are a little more modest this year. Find out how my 6 BR will shoot at 600 and get settings at regular intervals out to there with the 90 g Scenar bullet, then try 1000 meters. Get my 308 Sportco basically set the same way with the 155 g Amax. Have a good time admiring what other guys are doing and shooting the s...!, maybe have a good meal or two...that's enough for me... Don't even care if I get it all done. fred

The offer still stands on the .50 I will bring an extra couple of rounds for ya this year, there will probably be a couple of more 50 BMG's comming up this year. The other rifle you shot was a .300win mag at 1700.

I love it when people catch the bug.:dancingbanana::D:sniper:

Thank you very much! I will certainly follow through this year. Looking forward to it. Hope you will accept some dollars to help make reloads. It gets a bit pricey loading the really big rifles. Fred

Made it to 48" inches which is supposed to reach 1240yds.

MR, what load/cartridge are you using?

I am using a 80gr Berger at 2850fps to crunch my JBM data. The 80gr Amax is not in the database but expect them to be very similar.

Can't wait to see if they make it past 1200yds.

Jerry

The cartridge/load I am using is: 300 win mag 190gn SMK H4831SC cronod at 3120fps. I have yet to verify drops beyond 300m with this load since I'm not fully convinced the velocity is accurate from my chronograph. At this point its all theory untill I get out and prove it. Assuming this information is valid I will be all set to reach 1200 yd with 25 moa internal scope adjustment and the BDC reticle. An additional 400 yd (30 moa) would be possible by installing burris Zee rings, sounds like I'll be spending more money.

March 08/2008 Chronograph errors were confirmed, velocity verified at 2900fps not 3120fps.

Took a drive out today to see how the melting was going. Still got patches of snow and the road up with a bit mucky. Hopefully, in a week of warm weather, things will dry up.

Going to make plans for Sat dinner. If you will not be attending, please PM me. Otherwise, I will arrange for everyone which is around 30 shooters. If you are bringing guests/spouses/friends, got to let me know or they may not get the 'special' - whatever that might be.

Had a chance to plink at the GOPHER and reach out to 1485yds with my 223. Spotter would be a good thing as the ground is wet and like clay. No dust for a few weeks.

There are a few who are on the waiting list. If you can't make it, please let me know this week. Thanks,

Anyone able to bring pop up tents/awnings or walled tents?

Dinner April 12. - 5:30 Arrival, 6ish food served.

Well, tried to make reservations for 30 people at the pub we were at last year and that is too much for them this year.

So I have moved to plan B. A very nice restaurant that we can have a semi private party in (half the restaurant). Called the Ridge, its is just off the hwy next to Sumac Ridge Winery and on the Sumac Ridge golf course. They make a NASTY steak.

With a group this big, we need to preorder the dishes so we can have it ready and CHEAP! Choices all include Baked Potato, Veggies/hollandaise, Starter Salad for $20. Please PM me with your dish choice ASAP (no later then March 20).

1) Cdn AA Steak - that will be my choice...YUMMY
2) Baby Back Ribs
3) Salmon - not sure how it will be cooked but it is usually excellent.
4) Cornish hen - Stuffed.

If you want appetizers, that can be ordered when you arrive.

In general, the portions are very healthy so no one should leave hungry. It is about 1km from the Rosedale Motel. Our seating time is 5:30pm with food commencing around 6pm.

Look forward to your replies. Also, need more feedback on tables, tents/awnings, tarps, optics that you guys are bringing. I am sure we will all have enough but nice to preplan. Weather so far has been wet and cool so prep for that.

Deb, don't think there will be too many ticks this year but ..... :)

Shaunessy's is closed and keeping it in Summerland saves alot of travel for 27 shooters. Plus we have some coming down from Kelowna/north. Would add more travel time getting home.

The food is good too. Restaurant is booked. Just need people to decide what they want to eat.

FYI- I just called the Pleasantview Motel to ask about parking my van in their RV site. They told me that because of the highway crews in the area to work on Hwy 97, their RV lot is full. Also the guy said that the provincial park won't be open, nor will the municipal one. So if you were thinking of bringing an RV and parking somewhere, it could be a challenge. I only have a van, so I should be able to find someplace to park for a couple of nights, maybe even somewhere along the road into where we're going.
Jerry, is it possible to give directions as to which road we'd be taking in? If I knew that, I could likely find a place to camp out along the way. I have a "Backroad and Outdoor Recreation Mapbook, Volume III Kamloops/ Okanagan", if that's a help...

As this day approaches, I started thinking about what guns I was going to bring and from last year, the thing that stuck with me was that I didn't bring enough guns. This year I plan to make up for that. This year, while one gun is cooling off, I'm going to be warming up another gun trying to achieve some open sighted shots at crazy long range with some degree of accuracy.
