Got another yote this evening. Doing pretty much the opposite of what I probably should have done.
I went to my first stand, on the way in I saw some fairly fresh lookin tracks going the opposite way, any ways I go and set up on a fence line looking at 2 big fields. Seeing as it was an evening hunt I had only planned on 2 stands. I sit down, and do a couple of howls, wait a few minutes and answer myself back with a female invitation. About 15 minutes later with nothing, I go to some rabbit distress on the hand call. 15 minutes later nothing still, this was a 40 minutes stand.
I move back the way I came, I had originally planned on moving around this bush lot in the middle of the fields, but since I saw the tracks I decided to go across the road and try my last stand there. I cross teh road move into a position along a fence line again. The wind is at my back this time, I settle in for 10 minutes before I do anything, I decide to try something different, I start with some mouse noises from the E caller, that plays for about 2-3 minutes, I kept the volume pretty low. After about 10 minutes I go to the rabbit distress hand call, I also keep that fairly quiet, I do that for maybe 20-30 seconds and stop. About 15 minutes later I look over to see a yote coming in straight at me. (This is when I realized how good they are at pin pointing sounds) So the gun is facing slightly in the wrong direction, I wait for her to turn her head I and I go to move it, it goes crunch on the snow, I freeze, she looks right at me, maybe 75M out.
She sits down, so I turn my head a bit and use my hand to re-direct the sound from a lip squeek. Shes up and moving again, moving towards my "in" path, she will definitely smell me now, she gets to about 25M and I decide I have to move the gun, Ill hit her on the run if I have to. Sure enough she turns and runs, I gave a real loud lip squeek and she stopped about 50-60M out, thats all it took. DRT, the 87grain Vmax from my 243 did its job, no exit wound, and I can't find the entrance.
She is currently hanging in the garage, Ill skin her out tomorrow.
